Location: Thief River Falls
Full-time, unlimited position within the Transportation Department / District 2-AFSCME.
About the role
Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs daily and routine road surface maintenance activities to keep the roadways and roadsides safe and in good repair according to MnDOT standards. Assists in the maintenance and operation of snow and ice control to ensure safe and clear roadways, and performs related work as required.
Responsibilities
Roadway Maintenance and Roadside functions
- All activities required for roadside maintenance.
- All roadway surface maintenance activities.
- Services and makes minor repairs to operating equipment.
- Provides traffic control.
- Performs basic construction monitoring duties and basic inspection activities.
- Other duties as required.
Snow & Ice functions
- Maintain roadways for snow and ice control.
- Prepare and inspect winter equipment.
- Perform pre-season snow route inspection and post storm cleanup.
- Perform winter stockpile setup and transfer of anti-icing and de-icing chemicals.
- Install, repair, maintain, and remove snow fences; replace mailboxes.
- Maintain documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management.
- Perform traffic control set-ups and/or provide notification to dispatch of disabled vehicles.
Requirements
- A valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with no air brake restriction is required at time of application. Must obtain tanker endorsement within 30 days of hire and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License with no air brake restriction and tanker endorsement within 6 months of hire. License must be maintained throughout employment.
- One year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience).
- OR: Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (of at least 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits) will substitute for one year of experience. Transcripts must be submitted for education to be considered in lieu of work experience.
- Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and maintain routine written logs and simple records.
- Final candidate will receive a contingent job offer and must pass a computerized Math and Reading Assessment Test (Math: level 3 or higher; Reading: level 4 or higher). Previous test passers may be exempt from retesting.
- Must pass past-employer reference checks and criminal history check, including SEMA4 Records Check, Employment Reference Check, Education/License Verification, and Driver's License Check.
- Must pass a Federal Department of Transportation Pre-employment drug test (negative results required) and be subject to future random drug and alcohol testing. Must be registered in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Commercial Driver's License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
- Must be immediately accessible by phone and able to report to work within one hour of being called.
Working Conditions
- Work nights, outside in weather elements (hot and cold), and drive a motor vehicle on roadways and roadsides.
- Walk on even and uneven sloping ground.
- Frequently rotate through various body positions (standing, twisting, bending, sitting, kneeling, squatting).
- Operate machinery and equipment under varying temperatures.
- Infrequently move between 75 and 100 pounds; frequently move 50 pounds by pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying.
- Wear and use personal protective equipment to protect head, eyes, hearing, respiration, visibility, and feet from injury.
- Exposure to odors from herbicides and roadway reconstruction products (e.g., bituminous or patchwork).
Pay
$25.19 - $31.60 / hourly; $52,596 - $65,980 / annually.
Schedule
- Winter season: Monday - Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm.
- Summer season: Monday - Thursday, 6:30 am - 5:00 pm.
- Day shift, with additional winter snow and ice shifts and emergency call-ins as needed.
