About the role
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a Highway Maintenance Technician to support Guardrail Operations in Laramie, Wyoming. This role contributes directly to the safety, reliability, and quality of the state's transportation system by performing essential maintenance tasks and ensuring the integrity of roadway guardrails and related infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Maintains and operates complex equipment safely and proficiently
- Assists with training other technicians in the operation and maintenance of equipment
- Operates heavy equipment, including single and tandem axle trucks, augers, aerial lift equipment, plows, wing plows, sanders, and chemical systems to remove snow and ice from the roadway surface
- Rehabilitates roadway surfaces and/or traffic control devices such as signs and pavement markings
- Maintains and repairs highway-related facilities such as rest areas, including performing water and wastewater treatment according to EPA and DEQ requirements
- Communicates information to update others' status and/or process effectiveness
- Utilizes computers for agency practices, such as training and performance evaluations, and keeps up to date on technological advances with specialized equipment
- Removes snow and ice from roadways; determines the effectiveness of treatments and may determine when a change in treatment is necessary
- Adheres to all state and federal safety and quality standards, including the correct use of all associated personal protective equipment
Requirements
- Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License
- Must have the ability to obtain a Certification to operate specified equipment as directed by WYDOT
- Must have the ability to obtain a Certificate of course completion in Defensive Driving
- Must have the ability to obtain a First Aid/CPR certification
- Must have the ability to obtain a Flagger certification
Qualifications
- PREFERENCES: Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within twelve (12) months of hire
- KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of state highway pavement marking and signing standards, state and federal highway safety standards and traffic control procedures, equipment maintenance and repair procedures, hazardous materials response procedures, federal and state requirements for the proper use of personal protective equipment, basic equipment operation for single and tandem axle trucks, loaders, and tractors, safe work procedures, First Aid, CPR, and OSHA Safety Data Sheets for chemicals used in maintenance activities, and the ability to utilize basic office equipment such as computers, calculators, and telephones
- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education & Experience: Substitution: 2-4 years of relative work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction) Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within twelve (12) months of hire OR Education: Associate's Degree (typically in Engineering) Experience: 0-1 year of relative work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction) Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within twelve (12) months of hire
Notes
- FLSA: Non-Exempt
- WYDOT will conduct motor vehicle record checks to verify a valid driver's license.
- Individuals in this classification must pass a pre-employment drug screening and/or physical and will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
- Individuals in this classification must be available for emergency work calls at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Employees would only be eligible for one (1) hiring bonus in a 12-month period.
- Failure to complete the one-year service requirement will forfeit the hiring incentive, and funds will be recouped from final pay.
- Individuals must report to the department Shop within 30 minutes of receiving a call.
