Total annual compensation for this position is typically between $80,244-$82,944 ($68,244-$70,944 base pay and $12,000 housing stipend).

About the role
The Highway Maintenance Supervisor (TM III) is a working supervisor responsible for the overall maintenance and operations of a geographical area within the Region. This role supports and makes major patrol decisions to plan, develop, administer, and manage programs such as MS-4 regulations and EPA requirements. The position includes signature authority for expenditures, approval of employees' credit card use, expense reports, supply ordering, and leave approval.
At the supervisory level, you may recommend corrective actions, staffing patterns, equipment purchases, and regional policy changes. This position maintains a strong working relationship with the LTC Ops I in the Unit and supports higher-level decisions.
Responsibilities
- Ensure a safe and healthy work environment for all personnel
- Plan, assign, and review the work of Transportation Maintenance Worker II's and other staff
- Ensure compliance with all applicable policies, laws, rules, and regulations
- Coordinate with other Transportation Maintenance Supervisors and LTC Ops to ensure maintenance activities align with plans, specifications, and agency standards
- Supervise maintenance activities through scheduling staff, equipment, and products within allotted region dollars
- Train, mentor, and coach employees on the job and in the classroom; monitor personnel performance and address problems
- Supervise snow and ice control programs
- Support and coordinate operations, particularly in emergency conditions and unique situations
- Assist in emergency response incidents, including road closures, accidents, haz-mat spills, and road failures
- Coordinate with State Patrol and other law enforcement agencies
- Represent CDOT with cities, counties, other groups, officials, and the public
Work Environment
- Exposure to loud noise, fumes, odors, gasses, dusts, and chemicals that may affect breathing, eyes, and skin
- Required use of appropriate personal protective equipment
- Work with chemicals and cleaning products; some equipment requires the use of respirators
- Work in close proximity to heavy traffic
- Use of ladders and scissor lifts for heights of approximately 10–20 feet
- Operation of heavy equipment such as backhoes, tractors, bucket trucks, forklifts, skid steers, loaders, aerial devices, and other equipment
- Required to drive CDOT vehicles
- Exposure to high voltage (over 600V) and electrical shock
- Some positions are nights only or weekend positions
- Frequent response to emergencies outside regular work hours, including overtime, weekends, and holidays
- Must be physically able to work in extreme temperatures (hot and cold), variable weather conditions, and at varying elevations up to 12,000 feet for long periods
- Required use of computers to accomplish everyday work duties
- The average work week is 40 hours, with periodic overtime due to emergencies or inclement weather
Requirements
- At least five (5) years of road/highway maintenance experience, including two (2) years as an official work lead over a maintenance crew. Examples include:
- Repairing potholes
- Performing asphalt or concrete paving operations
- Operating heavy equipment (e.g., bulldozers, motor graders, backhoes, front-end loaders)
- Maintaining right-of-way fences
- Performing street striping and marking
- Mechanical mowing along the roadside (e.g., handheld weed eater up to a 15' rotary mower)
- Bridge, roadside ditch, and culvert cleaning and maintenance
- Installing and/or maintaining roadway signs or guardrail
- Operating mechanical sweepers
- Conducting traffic control
- Performing mechanical snow removal (gator up to a tandem truck)
- Work lead experience includes:
- Leading and mentoring at least two full-time employees
- Giving input into performance goals and reviews
- Applying standard operating procedures
- Assigning tasks and prioritizing work
- Identifying and gathering resources to complete tasks
- Checking work product
- Dealing with emergencies
- Conducting safety checks
- Possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License Class A or B with no restriction on air brakes, allowing operation within Colorado
- Pass a pre-employment screening, which may include social security number trace, criminal records check, public court records check, educational records, and driving records checks
- May be required to pass a controlled substance test (drug test) and DOT physical
- On-call work (rotating basis and subject to call)
- Essential Services Designation – required to report without delay or interruption to provide essential or emergency services
- May be required to live within thirty (30) minutes' driving time in normal weather conditions to respond in a timely manner after being notified to report to work
- New employees are required to take two weeks of maintenance training; veteran CDOT employees take one week of training annually (completed via computer or in Aurora)
- May be required to obtain a Hazardous Materials endorsement within 6 months to 1 year as a condition of appointment
- Must be willing to respond to emergencies outside regular work hours and work overtime, including weekends and holidays
