Duties

  • Patching pavements and filling potholes.
  • Cleaning ditches and culverts.
  • Cutting trees, shrubs, and grass.
  • Repairing guiderails and signs.
  • Plowing roads and salting icy pavements in the winter.
  • Performing snow and ice control, available for emergency call out within 1 hour.
  • Knowledgeable in S&I control methods.
  • Working knowledge of methods, equipment, and materials used for the reconstruction, repair, and maintenance of highways, drainage structures, and related facilities.
  • Supervising a snow & ice shift at residency and/or sub-residency.
  • Supervising a phase of a large maintenance project under the general direction of a Highway Maintenance Supervisor 2.
  • Operating light trucks and heavy dump trucks, performing one-person snow plowing, and operating other pieces of highway equipment, as necessary.
  • Instructing crew members in the tasks to be performed, all safety requirements, and Department policies, and answering any questions concerning the above-mentioned procedures.
  • Maintaining time and attendance records and materials used on the jobs in MMS and submitting brief written reports when requested.
  • Maintain understanding, implementation, and setup of applicable work zone traffic control work plans following the most current 619 standards.
  • Design, install, maintain, and remove lane closures in accordance with current guidelines based on roadway conditions.
  • Possess strong communication skills to foster communication between the workers, HMS2, and management.
  • Other duties appropriate to position and location.
  • Completing all required training for an HMS 1.

Responsibilities

  • Serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • To be considered for permanent appointment, candidates must be reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.
  • At the time of appointment and continuously thereafter, you will be required to have a valid New York State Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License with no air brake restriction.
  • Appointees will be required to satisfactorily complete a “one-person plowing” certification program which the Department of Transportation will offer during the probationary period.
  • Note: Cannabis use is not permitted for employees in this title and assignment.

Additional Comments

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
  • The starting salary for this position is $62,413. This amount is comprised of the base salary of $53,413 with an additional geographic pay differential of $9,000, specific to this title and location.
  • The maximum compensation for this position is $74,061. This amount is comprised of the standard job rate of $65,061 with an additional geographic pay differential of $9,000, specific to this title and location.
  • In addition, a Mid-Hudson Adjustment of $1,650 or a Downstate Adjustment of $3,400 may also apply depending on the location of the position.
  • Cannabis use is not permitted for employees in this title and assignment.
  • Cannabis use will be tested for during the pre-employment screening process and may be the basis for disqualification for employment or may be a basis for removal of employment.
