Position Overview

The Director of Highways oversees all aspects of the transportation department, managing approximately 340 miles of roads and bridges. They develop policies, strategic plans, and budgets, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, staffing, and organizational structure for the department
  • Develop and manage budgets, including grant applications and resource allocation
  • Supervise construction, reconstruction, and maintenance projects, ensuring safety and standards compliance
  • Oversee procurement, equipment management, and project documentation
  • Maintain effective communication with staff, public, and officials to foster positive relationships
  • Ensure regulatory compliance, safety standards, and quality control across projects
  • Collaborate on land-use reviews and facilitate community needs assessments

Qualifications & Skills

  • Experience in transportation construction, project planning, and public works management
  • Knowledge of engineering principles, traffic safety standards, and funding regulations
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • Financial management, strategic planning, and grant-writing capabilities
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment, interpret technical plans, and respond to emergency situations

Preferred education: Civil engineering or transportation management, with significant supervisory experience

Valid driver’s license: Class A CDL preferred
