About the Role

This series exists to provide and preserve a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public, while being courteous, considerate, and prompt in serving the public. Positions will be assigned based on experience and qualifications. This position is eligible for a $4,000 hiring incentive.

Pay

Salary range: $37,838 - $50,848 annually ($18.19 - $24.44 hourly).

• Highway Operations Worker (Grade 14): $18.19/hr (entry-level)
• Highway Operations Tech 1 (Grade 17): $20.46/hr (apprentice)
• Highway Operations Tech 2 (Grade 18): $22.45/hr (journey-level)
• Highway Operations Tech 3 (Grade 19): $24.44/hr (full journey/supervisor)

Responsibilities

• Operation of motorized vehicles and heavy-duty equipment
• Pavement care and preservation
• Landscape care and preservation
• Roadside shoulder restoration and repairs
• Signing and striping of roadways
• Delivery of equipment and materials
• Environmental compliance
• Vehicle and equipment care
• Scheduling, assigning, and overseeing subordinates' work (Tech 2 & 3)
• Inspecting work, training, and guiding staff (Tech 2 & 3)
• Responding to emergency call-outs (24/7); must be able to report to the maintenance yard within 30 minutes

Depending on work location and assignment, may encounter extremes of cold and heat, considerable time away from home base, rugged terrain, and high-speed traffic conditions. Requires lifting/carrying, pushing/pulling up to 50 lbs.

Requirements

• Highway Operations Worker: 6 months of roadway/highway job-related experience (e.g., operating motorized vehicles/heavy-duty equipment, signing/striping, pavement care, roadway operations, tunnel maintenance, or landscape preservation). Must obtain an Arizona CDL (Class “A”) permit within 90 days of hire and a full Class “A” CDL within 6 months.
• Highway Operations Tech 1: 1 year of roadway/highway job-related experience. Must possess an Arizona Class “A” CDL (manual or automatic transmission) with a (N) tanker endorsement prior to start date.
• Highway Operations Tech 2: 2 years of roadway/highway job-related experience. Must possess an Arizona Class “A” CDL with a (N) tanker endorsement prior to start date.
• Highway Operations Tech 3: 3 years of roadway/highway job-related experience. Must possess an Arizona Class “A” CDL with a (N) tanker endorsement prior to start date.

Additional endorsements may be required based on assigned area. Registration with the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse is mandatory for all CDL holders. Selected candidates must authorize ADOT to conduct limited queries on their CDL for the duration of employment.

Must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license (unexpired, neither revoked nor suspended). Employees driving on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and complete all required driver training. Personal vehicles used for state business must maintain statutorily required liability insurance.

All newly hired state employees must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify). Mandatory participation in the Arizona Retirement System (ASRS) is required.
