This position is eligible for a $4,000 hiring incentive.

About the Role

This series exists to provide and preserve a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public, as well as being courteous, considerate, and prompt in dealing with and serving the public. Positions will be assigned based on experience and qualifications.

Pay

  • Highway Operations Worker: $18.19/hour (Grade 14) – $37,838/year
  • Highway Operations Tech 1: $20.46/hour (Grade 17)
  • Highway Operations Tech 2: $22.45/hour (Grade 18)
  • Highway Operations Tech 3: $24.44/hour (Grade 19) – up to $50,848/year

Responsibilities

  • Operation of motorized vehicles and equipment
  • Pavement care and preservation
  • Landscape care and preservation
  • Roadside shoulder restoration and repairs
  • Signing and striping of roadways
  • Delivery of equipment and materials
  • Environmental compliance
  • Vehicle and equipment care
  • Scheduling, assigning, and overseeing subordinates' work (for Tech 2 and 3)
  • Inspecting work, training, and guiding staff (for Tech 2 and 3)

Position responds to emergency call-outs (24 hours a day, seven days a week); must be able to respond to the Maintenance yard within 30 minutes. Depending on work location and assignment, may encounter extremes of cold and heat, considerable time away from home base, rugged terrain, and high-speed traffic conditions. Requires lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling up to 50 lbs.

Requirements

  • Highway Operations Worker:
    • 6 months of roadway/highway job-related experience (e.g., operating motorized vehicles/heavy-duty equipment, signing/striping, pavement care, roadway operations, tunnel maintenance, or landscape care)
    • Must obtain Arizona CDL (Class “A”) permit within 90 days of hire and a full Class “A” CDL within 6 months
  • Highway Operations Tech 1:
    • 1 year of roadway/highway job-related experience
    • Arizona Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with (N) tanker endorsement required prior to start date
  • Highway Operations Tech 2:
    • 2 years of roadway/highway job-related experience
    • Arizona Class “A” CDL with (N) tanker endorsement required prior to start date
  • Highway Operations Tech 3:
    • 3 years of roadway/highway job-related experience
    • Arizona Class “A” CDL with (N) tanker endorsement required prior to start date

Additional endorsements may be required based on assigned area. Registration with the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse is required. Must possess and retain a current, valid, unexpired, and non-suspended driver’s license. Employees driving on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks and must complete required training.
