High School ENL Teacher

Dr. Richard Izquierdo Health & Science Charter School is seeking a certified, or on-pathway, experienced English as a New Language (ENL) Teacher to provide instruction to high school students. The role reports to the High School Principal and ENL Coordinator.

Responsibilities

• Content Knowledge and Planning
  • Exhibit understanding and skills relevant to the subject area(s) taught
  • Make topics and activities meaningful and relevant to each student
  • Integrate available technology resources compatible with students’ needs and abilities
  • Develop clear, logical, and sequential lesson plans using Understanding by Design principles
  • Plan with appropriate specialists to differentiate instruction for all students
• Instructional Strategies
  • Link present content/skills with past and future learning experiences
  • Use various instructional strategies (e.g., modeling, cooperative learning, collaboration, reading and writing in content areas) to differentiate learning
  • Use effective questioning strategies to engage students and promote learning
  • Monitor students’ understanding and adjust teaching as appropriate
  • Maximize student learning by providing active and successful participation opportunities
  • Explain content and demonstrate skills in multiple ways to meet diverse needs
  • Hold each learner individually responsible for learning
• Assessment
  • Use results of assessments to monitor and modify instruction
  • Use teacher-made and standardized tests to measure student performance
  • Use oral, non-verbal, and written forms of student assessment
  • Maintain and use records of student progress for instructional decisions
  • Continuously monitor student progress and provide meaningful feedback
  • Demonstrate competence in grading, ranking, and reporting student achievement
• Student Communication and Rapport
  • Use precise language and acceptable oral/written communication
  • Articulate clear learning goals and instructional procedures
  • Model caring, fairness, courtesy, respect, and active listening

  • Enforce the school’s student behavior policy
  • Communicate clear behavior expectations to students and parents
  • Actively monitor student behavior and provide constructive feedback
  • Create a physical setting and routines that promote learning and minimize disruption
  • Structure transitions efficiently and constructively
  • Manage emergency situations as they occur
• Professional Demeanor and Development
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor
  • Interact ethically and professionally with colleagues and students
  • Carry out duties in accordance with established policies and regulations
  • Select appropriate channels for resolving concerns and maintain confidentiality
  • Complete classroom and school assignments in a timely and effective manner

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree (required), Master’s Degree (preferred)
• At least 2 years of prior high school teaching experience
• NYS certification in ENL (preferred) or on the pathway to certification
• Demonstrated success in non-traditional and/or urban school settings
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Experience with educational technology (SMART Board, student laptops, etc.)
• Knowledge or ability to use SIS (e.g., PowerSchool) or online learning platforms (e.g., Google Classroom)

Schedule

This is a full-time, 10-month position. Regular hours are Monday through Friday, 7:55 AM to 3:55 PM, with additional attendance required for special events.

Pay

$75,000 - $105,000 annually (based on experience).
