About the role

Hansen Agri-PLACEMENT is representing a progressive dairy operation in California seeking an experienced, hands-on Herdsman to oversee herd performance, reproduction, employees, and daily dairy activities. This position plays a key role in maintaining excellent animal health, production, operational efficiency, and overall herd performance.

Responsibilities

• Oversee herd health and reproduction programs, including monitoring breeding performance, semen and genetic selection, replacement planning, and assisting with culling decisions.
• Work closely with the veterinarian and nutritionist to monitor animal health, treatment protocols, feeding programs, ration performance, and feed efficiency.
• Supervise and schedule dairy employees, assist with hiring and training, and maintain accurate herd and treatment records.
• Manage inventory, monitor feed accuracy and waste, and help read feed bunks.
• Ensure preventative maintenance programs are followed for milking, manure, and feeding equipment.
• Monitor cow comfort, ventilation, bedding, and overall facility conditions.
• Maintain accountability for established milk quality, animal welfare, safety, and environmental protocols.

Requirements

• Strong dairy herd management experience with a solid understanding of overall dairy operations.
• Strong herd health and reproduction management skills.
• Experience with AI breeding, semen selection, reproductive protocols, and monitoring breeding performance.
• Previous employee supervision, training, and leadership experience.
• Working knowledge of dairy nutrition, feeding programs, and feed management.
• Experience with DairyComp, EZ Feed, VAS, or similar dairy management software.
• Knowledge of milk quality, animal welfare, and dairy production practices.
• Strong recordkeeping, inventory management, and organizational skills.
• General knowledge of dairy facilities, equipment, and preventative maintenance.
• Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.

Pay

Annual salary range: $80,000 – $85,000 USD.
