About the role
Leads and participates in laboratory performance improvement activities, promotes team building, employee engagement, patient satisfaction, and safety.
Responsibilities
- Manages quality assessment, technical oversight, problem solving, scheduling, interviewing applicants, staff performance input, training, and competency evaluations.
- Performs assigned pre-analytical activities related to laboratory testing, including equipment maintenance, function checks, documentation, inventory control, specimen collection, biological specimen processing, cleaning, disinfection, quality control, and calibration.
- Participates in laboratory and hospital Performance Improvement activities.
- Completes all expected tests and analytical procedures efficiently and accurately according to established procedures, performance standards, and departmental competency standards, participating in proficiency testing and adhering to federal, state, and institutional regulations.
- Reads, examines, and interprets complex test results, serving as a resource and addressing complex tests/procedures.
- Manages instrument maintenance and troubleshooting practices.
- Leads quality control and quality assurance testing.
- Provides orientation and training to new employees and medical technology students, and documenting orientation and training.
- Provides guidance to technical and support staff, resolves customer service issues within guidelines, and supports education to clinical staff as appropriate or requested.
- Fulfills safety policies including the use of PPE, handwashing, and hazardous chemical handling, and completes required training for handling hazardous waste.
- Assists with Standard Operating Procedures and document control.
- May include transport of hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area; employee will be required to complete initial training (prior to handling hazardous waste) and refresher training to include proper handling and transport of hazardous waste, and proper selection, use and disposal of personal protective equipment.
Requirements
- Technical skills and aptitudes related to the laboratory testing, procedures, and processes performed in the department or work area assigned.
- Follows and ensures adherence of staff to the Corporate Compliance Plan and to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state, and federal agencies and accrediting bodies; protects the confidentiality of patient information and results at all times.
- Ability to work independently and adapt to varying priorities, including directing workflow with minimal supervision.
- Ability to maintain equipment/records and perform quality assessment activities.
- Able to educate and train new staff in medical laboratory settings.
- Able to effectively communicate in verbal and written English with patients, staff, partners, and customers of varied backgrounds in a respectful, effective, and professional manner.
- Basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- Ability to operate computer systems to maintain patient documentation, testing records, and other related documents.
- Excellent knowledge of laboratory rules and regulations.
- Excellent communication, leadership, mentorship, and customer service skills promoting a strong teamwork environment.
- Able to delegate effectively and multitask.
- Excellent computer and keyboarding skills; familiarity with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook, and Internet.
- Maintains continuing education hours.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's [Required] Field Of Study in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution; OR if the field of study does not match, candidate must meet the CLIA equivalency listed in additional information.
- Work Experience: 1+ year of leadership experience [Preferred] 3+ years of clinical laboratory experience [Required].
- Additional Information: An equivalent combination of education and/or relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of the stated degree requirement.
