Heavy Equipment Shop Mechanic

Experience in a similar role and environment, with a strong preference for candidates with at least five years of heavy equipment technician experience, particularly in a dealership setting. Caterpillar work experience and proficiency in rebuilding/repairing machinery—including hydraulics, electrical, powertrain, engines, and Tier IV Emissions systems—are highly valued. Must prioritize safety, possess excellent client service skills, and own/maintain required personal tools.

About the role

Troubleshoot, repair, recondition, and service Caterpillar and other Empire allied machines, systems, and power train components in a shop environment. Diagnose malfunctions and failures of electrical, hydraulic, and power train components using electronic tools, schematics, and other troubleshooting methods. Identify and evaluate root cause failures while demonstrating effective communication to explain equipment conditions, status, and recommendations to clients, associates, and management.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment malfunctions and failures.
• Maintain good client relations and support corporate marketing objectives.
• Repair, recondition, and maintain equipment and components.
• Prepare service reports.
• Plan and control cost of repair jobs.
• Maintain company equipment in good, clean, and orderly condition.
• Work safely at all times; adhere to all applicable safety policies.
• Comply with all company policies, procedures, and standards.
• Own and maintain required personal tools.
• Learn and use Empire, Caterpillar, and allied product procedures and systems.
• Maintain current MSHA card if required by work area.
• Provide on-the-job training to technicians and helpers as assigned.
• Make warranty recommendations.
• Communicate with proper individuals to clarify instructions or discuss scope/progress of job.
• Work overtime as needed.
• Travel to remote locations as needed.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• At least six months of related experience in a similar role and environment.
• Ability to speak, read, write, and comprehend English.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Ability to successfully complete a skills assessment (eTRAIN test).
• High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
• Must be able to communicate effectively in English.

Skills

• Communicate verbally and in writing to explain equipment conditions, problems, recommendations, and repair processes.
• Basic computer and internet knowledge, including operating scanning/diagnostic tools.
• Operate and understand diagnostic equipment, including computerized instrumentation.
• Knowledge of CAT machine components and systems.
• Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively.
• Acceptable attendance to meet company standards and requirements.

Physical Demands

• Regularly required to sit, use hands, talk, or hear, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and stoop or kneel.
• Regularly lift and/or move up to 60 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, and peripheral vision.
• May be required to operate a forklift with appropriate certification(s).

Work Environment

• Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, high/precarious places, and outside weather conditions.
• Frequently exposed to wet/humid conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat.
• Noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
