Heating and Air Conditioning Mechanic II

Responsibilities

• Performs journeyman level installation, repair, service, and maintenance to heating, air conditioning, refrigerating, and ventilating equipment.
• Leads or instructs lesser skilled workers and monitors activities of contractors.
• Lays out projects, evaluates and tests equipment and component operation, and determines method of repair.
• Replaces and disposes of refrigerant chemicals.
• Inspects work both in progress and upon completion to assure quality and conformance to standards.
• Maintains cost and operational records as required and prepares lists of parts and supplies to be requisitioned for assigned jobs.
• Drives an automobile or light truck to transport workers and equipment to and from job sites.
• Assists other technicians such as plumbers and electricians with large projects.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

• Four years' experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, air conditioning, refrigerating, and ventilating equipment plus at least two years of which included commercial and/or industrial units.
• Related education may be substituted on a year for year basis for the required experience.
• Possession of Type I and Type II E.P.A.-approved refrigerant certification for technicians is required at the time of appointment.
• Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a noncommercial, class C Maryland driver's license is required at the time of appointment.

Qualifications

• Four years' experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of heating, air conditioning, refrigerating, and ventilating equipment, two years of which included commercial and/or industrial units.

Skills

• Ability to perform heavy physical labor including bending, stooping, climbing ladders, lifting and carrying very heavy objects, and the operation of motor vehicles, and hand and power tools.
• Knowledge of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigerating equipment and components.
• Ability to lead or instruct lesser skilled workers and monitor activities of contractors.
• Ability to lay out projects, evaluate and test equipment and component operation, and determine method of repair.
• Ability to inspect work both in progress and upon completion to assure quality and conformance to standards.
