Heat Shop Service Mechanic I

About the Role

An employee in this class performs the full range of duties associated with the installation, maintenance, and repair of ventilation, pressure vessel, and environmental control systems. A larger, costlier, exceptional, or more complex job may be reviewed by a technical supervisor to determine appropriate procedures and to ensure that proper work methods are being followed. Employees receive work orders indicating the nature of the work to be done and are expected to determine the materials, tools, and repair procedures needed. Errors may be quickly revealed or may only be located after involvement of a supervisor, and may be costly to fix. Limited supervision is given to this employee.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot and repair electrical control circuits using electrical test devices.
• Replace faulty thermostats, wiring, and controls.
• Check accuracy and calibrate electrical, pneumatic, and electronic control systems.
• Clean, lubricate, and service ventilation, gas, and oil burners and environmental control equipment.
• Set ventilation, heating, and environmental control equipment into place.
• Wire boiler controls.
• Fit and repair low-pressure steam and hot water piping.
• Connect and install piping and ductwork.
• Remove and replace joints or lengths of pipe and duct in distribution systems.
• Adjust and balance distribution systems to achieve maximum energy efficiency.
• Use recycling and recovery equipment.

Requirements

• High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma.
• Experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of ventilation, low-pressure steam/hot water pressure vessels, and environmental control systems is preferred.
• Must be able to bend, push, pull, and lift at least 50 pounds.
• Must be able to climb ladders and perform physical labor for extended periods.
• Must have a current, valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
• Current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III, or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations part 82, subpart F.
• Additional certifications and/or credentials as required by the Director of Maintenance.

Skills & Knowledge

• Working knowledge of oil and gas-fired boiler pressure vessels.
• Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of ventilation, low-pressure steam/hot water pressure vessels, and environmental control equipment.
• Working knowledge of electricity.
• Working knowledge of the design and operation of heating boilers.
• Working knowledge of the design and operation of pneumatic control systems.
• Ability to diagnose equipment malfunctions and prescribe repair procedures.
• Ability to follow specific written or oral instructions.
• Ability to use recycling and recovery equipment.
• Skill in the use of tools and equipment utilized in the repair of ventilation, low-pressure steam/hot water boilers, and environmental control equipment.

Pay

Starting salary range: $38,089.44 – $57,457.80 (Grade 65).

Schedule

12-month work year, non-exempt (FLSA), at-will employment.
