About the Role

A Heating and Air Conditioning Technician II diagnoses, maintains, and repairs all types of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and related equipment. This role involves working on a 24-hour on-call basis in environments such as boiler rooms, where there is potential exposure to hazards like boiler explosions, noise pollution, and toxic materials. The work requires moderate physical exertion, including lifting heavy air conditioning units (75-100 lbs.).

Responsibilities

• Diagnose, maintain, and repair heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment.
• Repair, overhaul, and calibrate HVAC systems and components.
• Troubleshoot routine problems in heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems.
• Read blueprints and engineering specifications.
• Work in confined spaces with potential exposure to hazardous conditions.

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate.
• Three years of experience in the maintenance and repair of heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment.
• Substitution options:
  • Six months of additional experience may substitute for each year of high school or GED.
  • One year of coursework in an environmental control system (or climate control) curriculum may substitute for six months of experience.
  • Completion of an apprenticeship program approved by the State of Maryland may substitute for up to two years of experience.
• Possession of a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved C.F.C. Certificate of Completion as a Technician Type I or Type II (required upon hire).
• Valid Maryland Class C Non-commercial driver’s license or equivalent out-of-state license (provisional licenses are not accepted).
• Must provide some of your own tools.

Skills

• Knowledge of hot water and steam plants.
• Knowledge of air atomizing and rotary type burners.
• Knowledge of absorption, centrifugal, and reciprocating chilling plants.
• Knowledge of pneumatic temperature control systems.
• Knowledge of safety practices for HVAC maintenance and repair.
• Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot HVAC systems.
• Ability to read blueprints and engineering specifications.
• Physical ability to lift heavy objects (75-100 lbs.).

Pay

Salary range: $54,422.00 - $88,706.00 annually.

• Candidates under final consideration for positions of trust will undergo a criminal background check and/or fingerprinting.
• Selected candidates must complete a mandatory six-month probation period.
