About the role

The Health Specialist ensures compliance with Head Start Performance Standards and other applicable requirements, and assists in identifying and meeting family health needs within the YMCA of Metro Atlanta's programs.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development and update of the annual Health Specialist Work Plans and Policies and Procedures.
  • Review education records and lesson plans for completeness and accuracy.
  • Assist in the planning and delivery of pre-service and in-service training for staff, parents, and volunteers.
  • Collaborate with other program specialists to ensure health, nutrition, mental health/disabilities, and social services are incorporated into classroom activities.
  • Conduct scheduled site visits to all Head Start Program Sites to monitor Health Specialist Services activities, including tracking and follow-up, Health/Safety, and nutrition services.
  • Report program/site medical, dental, hearing, and vision concerns as appropriate.
  • Monitor record-keeping systems, including reviewing program Health Specialist files for accuracy, generating and reviewing child data, and ensuring confidentiality.
  • Maintain and monitor reports of all services and internal referrals/follow-ups, including Health screenings, dental and physical examinations, to meet the 45/90-day mandate.
  • Track mandated health screenings/exams for all enrollees and schedule appointments as needed:
    • Screenings (45-Day): Hearing, Speech, Physical Growth Assessment, Vision, Developmental, Dental, Blood Pressure
    • Examinations (90-Day)
  • Ensure files contain completed Health History and signed parental consent forms for all enrollees.
  • Enter and maintain ChildPlus Health Services data activities, including immunizations/screenings, examinations/treatment, and follow-up results.
  • Track Health Specialist services delivered to children at all sites and submit Site Visit Reports to Center Managers/Leaders and FSAs.
  • Meet with providers and parents during scheduled consultations in the absence of the Manager.
  • Assist with planning Health Specialist activities such as fairs, conferences, and parent meetings.
  • Assist in recruiting community and healthcare agencies/providers for participation on the Health Services Advisory Committee.
  • Attend community meetings to network and identify resources for Head Start children and families.
  • Monitor and maintain records of inventory to ensure adequate first aid supplies, equipment, and related supplies are on hand at all times.
  • Prepare and submit Monthly Reports on service delivery monitoring, inventory, and site visits.
  • Compile updated information on community resources.
  • Recruit volunteers and in-kind contributions.

Note: All medical, dental, vision, and hearing concerns must be reported to the Health Manager immediately.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in health, public health, or related fields and 3+ years of experience in Social Services/Health/Special Education services.
  • A combination of education and Head Start work experience directly related to Social Services and/or Health Special Education will be considered.

Qualifications

  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check, including criminal record check, drug screening, motor vehicle record (MVR), and reference check.
  • Must be legally eligible to work in the U.S. without current or future sponsorship.

Skills

  • Ergonomics: Sitting, bending, stooping, standing, 15% repetitive keyboard work, seeing, verbal communications, ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
