About the Role

The Health Services Counselor is responsible for providing mental health counseling services to adult and/or pediatric patients, performing assessments, diagnoses, treatment planning, coordination of care, and discharge planning tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Works collaboratively with interdisciplinary staff to design and implement appropriate treatment plans, including discharge plans.
  • Provides professional counseling and therapeutic intervention to patients and/or families utilizing age-specific treatment modalities.
  • Collaborates with community agencies which provide services for patients and their families.
  • Leads or co-leads patients' groups as needed.
  • Knowledge and mastery of assigned grant programs; submits statistical reports, outcome measures, and scaling tools as required by grant.
  • Participates in orientation and training of interdisciplinary staff.
  • Participates in program improvement projects as implemented for evaluation.
  • Implements goals of a Recovery-Oriented System of Care (ROSC) model by promoting quality of life, community health, and wellness; preventing behavioral health conditions; intervening earlier in illness progression; reducing harm caused by substance use disorders and mental health conditions; and providing resources for sustained wellness.
  • Implements trauma-informed care, including understanding trauma dynamics, assessment, and coping tools.
  • Maintains current knowledge of clinical practice, including age-related bio-psychosocial issues, treatment planning, and therapeutic interventions.
  • Participates in Committees as assigned.
  • Supervises students.
  • Provides coverage as assigned.
  • Participates in hospital, departmental, and unit meetings.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in a related field is required.
  • Generally requires 3 to 5 years of related experience.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and any additional applicable life support certification for Healthcare Providers is required upon hire, with at least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment.
  • Must meet and maintain current all unit-specific and organizational skills/competencies, certifications/licensures, as required by the area.
