Position Overview

Carter G. Woodson School is seeking a dedicated and student-centered School Health Counselor to support the academic, emotional, and social well-being of scholars in grades K–12. This role is critical in ensuring students are equipped with the tools needed to succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

Key Responsibilities

  • Student Support & Counseling

    • Provide individual and small group counseling services to students experiencing emotional, behavioral, or social challenges
    • Conduct risk assessments and provide crisis intervention when necessary
    • Develop and implement individualized support plans for students in need
    • Support students with anxiety, trauma, grief, and behavioral concerns
  • School-Wide Mental Health Programming

  • Design and implement school-wide mental health initiatives and prevention programs
  • Lead social-emotional learning (SEL) groups and workshops
  • Promote a positive school climate focused on student well-being and resilience
  • Collaboration & Staff Support

    • Partner with teachers, instructional leaders, and administration to support student success
    • Provide strategies and resources to staff for managing student behavior and emotional needs
    • Participate in MTSS/RTI meetings and contribute to intervention planning
  • Family & Community Engagement

    • Communicate with families regarding student needs and provide resources/referrals as appropriate
    • Connect families to external mental health and community-based services
    • Support parent education initiatives related to student well-being
  • Compliance & Documentation

    • Maintain accurate, confidential records of student services in compliance with federal and state regulations
    • Ensure adherence to all school policies and ethical standards
    • Aid in reporting and documentation for compliance and audits as needed

    Qualifications Required

    • Master’s degree in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or related field

    • Valid North Carolina licensure (LCMHC, LCSW, or equivalent) or eligibility for licensure

    • Experience working with children or adolescents in a school or clinical setting

    • Strong understanding of trauma-informed practices and social-emotional development

    Preferred

    • Experience working in a K–12 school setting

    • Bilingual (Spanish/English) strongly preferred

    • Experience supporting diverse student populations, including English Learners
