Health Promotion Manager

About the Role

The County of San Luis Obispo Health Agency is recruiting for a Public Health Division Manager for the Health Promotion Division. The Health Promotion Division provides a range of health education programs and activities aimed at empowering individuals, groups, and organizations to take responsibility for adopting healthier behaviors and supporting policies that promote health.

  • Tobacco/smoking control
  • Wellness (healthy eating and active living)
  • Injury prevention and healthy aging (Alzheimer’s prevention/awareness)
  • Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)

Other areas of focus include:

  • Adopting health in all policies
  • Built environment through coordination with planning and transportation organizations
  • Climate change mitigation and adaptation
  • Social determinants of health such as housing, food security, and safe neighborhoods

Under the direction of the Health Officer/Public Health Director, this role plans, organizes, and directs the operations, activities, and services of the division; manages blended federal, state, and local funding; coordinates and directs personnel, resources, and communications to meet identified County and public health service needs; and ensures effective and efficient division activities. The position also supervises and evaluates the performance of assigned personnel.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of community health education, preferably with a master’s degree in Public Health or Community Health Education
  • Ability to become a Certified Health Education Specialist at the time of hire
  • Strong experience in health education and health promotion programs
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to present clear and persuasive messages
  • Proven management skills in directing plans and operations, employee supervision, data gathering and analysis, fiscal oversight, developing partnerships, and working collaboratively with public and private stakeholders
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to apply best practices

Requirements

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in business or public administration, health or hospital administration, accounting, social sciences, or a closely related field. Professional-level administrative experience in a hospital or health care agency may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

In addition, four years of increasingly responsible professional-level experience performing a variety of administrative or fiscal activities—two years of the required experience must be in a supervisory position. Post-graduate casework or a post-graduate degree in a related field may substitute for one year of the required non-supervisory experience.
