Health Information Management Director

About the role

At Oceans Behavioral Hospital Longview, we are passionate about helping adults and seniors manage challenges associated with anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. The Health Information Management (HIM) Director coordinates health information processes, ensuring accurate medical records management in accordance with established procedures, Joint Commission, federal, and state regulations.

Responsibilities

• Supervises and backs up a facility-wide, efficient Health Information Management Program and staff.
• Monitors health information management systems and sets standards for data quality and ethical practice.
• Ensures the centralized coding team receives all discharged records for appropriate coding and indexing.
• Responds to requests for medical records, including legal and court cases, while maintaining confidentiality.
• Ensures all transcribed reports are complete, accurate, and on patient records.
• Supervises documentation, usage, retrieval, and storage of all inpatient and outpatient records.
• Participates in the development of health information management policies and procedures.
• Provides education and training to hospital employees on HIM policies and procedures.
• Collects data and prepares monthly statistical reports as requested.
• Ensures timely completion, integrity, authenticity, and accessibility of medical records through proper chart ordering, analysis, and deficiency tracking.
• Participates in the Performance Improvement (PI) process by monitoring standards of excellence in discharged medical records and reporting deviations.
• Performs other duties and projects as assigned.

Requirements

• At least 1 year of supervisory experience; 5 years in a psychiatric HIM department preferred.
• Must hold one of the following credentials: Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Accredited Record Technician (ART).
• High school diploma with additional training in Health Information Management (e.g., certified health information management technician).
• Extensive knowledge of health information management, legal aspects of admissions and information releases, statistical compilation, computer systems, Joint Commission, and Medicare Survey preparation.
• Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification required.
• Training in SHARE and ability to pass general age/disability and cultural sensitivity post-test.
• Must complete CPR certification and an Oceans-approved behavioral health de-escalation program.
• Ability to handle interruptions, multiple inquiries, and high-paced, stressful environments.
• Work is primarily indoors, with approximately 90% or more of time spent inside a building.
