The Head of Video is a creative and strategic role driving the future of video and podcast content at The Free Press. This position requires editorial rigor, management expertise, and business strategy, with a focus on optimizing content for platforms like YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, X, and LinkedIn. The role is based in New York City and reports to the Deputy Editor.
Responsibilities
- Manage the video team, including full-time employees and contractors working on video shows, podcasts, and social clips.
- Guide existing video podcasts and develop, greenlight, and launch new shows, ensuring editorial direction, guest selection, and production quality align with platform success (YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, X, LinkedIn, etc.).
- Implement an efficient clipping strategy aimed at maximizing virality.
- Maintain profit-and-loss responsibility for The Free Press’s video organization and set measurable KPIs.
- Serve as a liaison between department heads, producers, and editors, translating high-level editorial priorities into actionable creative direction.
- Directly oversee Directors of Production and Post-Production to ensure final video products meet The Free Press’s standards from conception through delivery.
Qualifications
- Experience working directly with on-camera talent, producers, and editors to shape output.
- Fluency with production tools and workflows (e.g., microphones, cameras, Adobe Premiere, platforms like Riverside), including emerging AI products.
- Strong post-production sensibility, with the ability to collaborate on pacing, structure, tone, and visual style while translating stakeholder feedback into clear creative direction.
- Ability to operate at a fast pace, including responding to breaking news outside standard hours when needed.
- Passion for The Free Press’s mission and a natural understanding of what constitutes a “Free Press story.”
Pay
Hiring salary range: $185,000 – $200,000. The range applies to New York City, California, Colorado, Washington state, and most other geographies. Starting pay depends on job-related factors, including geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
