About the role
The Head of School at American Classical Academy Rutherford (ACAR) is a unique opportunity to lead a growing institution that values the classical liberal arts tradition and the pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty. Reporting to the Board of Directors, this leader will oversee the education and well-being of students, the professional growth of faculty, and the operational excellence of the academy.
Responsibilities
- Lead ACAR as it grows into a full K–12 institution, adding approximately 50 students per grade each year.
- Steward a school community centered on virtue, civic responsibility, and the formation of thoughtful, self-governing individuals.
- Model virtuous living and embody the love of learning.
- Build a culture rooted in the classical tradition, inspiring teachers and families.
- Anchor a community in the enduring ideals of liberty and virtue.
- Delegate full operational leadership to the Head of School, governed under the John Carver Policy Governance model.
Requirements
The ideal candidate will have a deep commitment to the classical liberal arts tradition and a proven track record of leading schools or organizations that value these principles. They should possess:
- A bachelor’s degree in education, classics, history, or a related field.
- A master’s degree in education or a related field, preferred.
- Experience as a Head of School or equivalent leadership role in a K–12 setting.
- Strong administrative skills and a demonstrated ability to manage a complex organization.
- A passion for the classical liberal arts and a commitment to their implementation in education.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the broader community.
- A deep understanding of the Western heritage of wisdom, virtue, and self-government.
- Experience working with a diverse student body and community.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will bring:
- At least 10 years of relevant experience in education or a related field.
- Experience with curriculum development and implementation.
- Knowledge of the John Carver Policy Governance model.
- Experience with strategic planning and organizational development.
- Experience with fundraising and resource management.
- Experience with community engagement and outreach.

The Head of School must possess:

- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- An ability to inspire and motivate faculty and staff.
- An understanding of the importance of a well-rounded education and the role of the classical liberal arts in achieving it.

Pay
Salary range: $120,000 - $150,000, commensurate with experience.
Schedule
The Head of School will work a standard Monday through Friday schedule, with occasional evening and weekend meetings and events.
