About the role
To maintain the safety, cleanliness, and upkeep of the physical school plant and grounds to provide an environment conducive to learning.
Responsibilities
- Helps in the selection, assignment, scheduling, and training of members of the custodial staff at the assigned school.
- Plans and oversees all maintenance and repair work, maintaining a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency.
- Monitors the time records and schedules of all custodial employees in the school and certifies them for salary payments.
- Maintains an inventory and recommends purchase of suitable supplies, tools, and equipment.
- Evaluates the performance of the custodial staff on a regular basis.
- Strives constantly to promote the safety, health, and comfort of the students and employees.
- Keeps all boiler rooms and electrical rooms clear of rubbish and stored materials.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds on a regular basis.
- Demonstrates all duties necessary as a custodian.
- Uses district checklist to maintain playground equipment in safe working condition.
- Works with others consistently in a cooperative and respectful manner.
- Performs all other duties and responsibilities designated by the principal.
Requirements
- 3 years experience as a school custodian or the equivalent in custodial service in other institutions and firms.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
Physical Requirements
- Requires medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, crouching, crawling, climbing, stretching or lifting all of the time.
- Involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis.
- Requires considerable skill, adeptness, and speed in the use of fingers, hands, or limbs in tasks involving very close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
- Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or compositional characteristics of data, people, or things.
- Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information, including giving assignments and instructions to subordinates and receiving information from supervisors.
- Requires the ability to read a variety of administrative, technical, and other documents and reports, and to prepare various types of reports and documents with proper format.
- Requires the ability to speak before others with poise, voice control, and confidence.
- Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Requires the ability to interpret instructions furnished in oral, written, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
- Requires the ability to apply influence systems in staff supervision, to make independent judgments in absence of supervision, and to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.
- Requires the ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, follow and give verbal and written instructions, counsel and teach employees.
- Must be able to communicate effectively in facility management, building trades, custodial care, and related technical or professional languages.
- Requires the ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, determine percentages, decimals, and time, and use practical applications of fractions, percentages, ratio, and proportion.
- Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape.
- Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using office and specialized equipment, and to operate motor vehicles.
- Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, control knobs, switches, hand and power tools, and measuring devices.
- Must have significant levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
- Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color.
- Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions, adapt to performing under stress, and handle emergency situations or tight deadlines.
- The worker may be subject to tension as a regular, consistent part of the job and may be subject to moderate danger or risk.
- Requires the ability to talk and hear (expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words and perceiving nature of sounds by ear).
