Responsibilities
- Containerize hazardous and explosive hazardous waste in approved containers using correct segregation, compatibility, and packaging practices.
- Maintain positive custody of waste from pickup through staging and shipment; ensure containers remain closed, serviceable, and properly staged.
- Prepare waste for shipment and disposal, including coordinating internal transfers, staging for transport, and supporting off-site shipment execution.
- Support waste profiling/characterization workflows by gathering required generator knowledge and documentation needed for profiles, manifests, and disposal acceptance.
- Ensure compliant container marking/labeling and date management in accordance with RCRA accumulation requirements and site procedures.
- Support DOT shipping compliance tasks as assigned, including verifying packaging, markings, labels, placards (as applicable), and shipping documentation to support compliant outbound shipments.
- Support routine waste pickups and container delivery operations; operate Government-furnished vehicles (GOV) and material handling equipment as authorized.
- Maintain organization and housekeeping of waste staging and storage areas to keep inspection readiness at all times.
- Maintain awareness of inventory for DOT-approved containers, labels, and spill response supplies; notify the team when stock is low.
- Support spill management tasks for oil/HW incidents (including bulging drums) by securing the area, deploying spill materials as trained, documenting conditions, and escalating immediately to program leadership.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- 2+ years of hazardous waste operations experience (handling, containerization, staging, shipping support, or disposal support).
- Working knowledge of safe waste handling practices and ability to work in industrial environments using required PPE.
- Knowledge of DOT shipping requirements and shipping compliance concepts (training may be provided to meet site-specific requirements).
- Valid driver’s license.
- Current 40-hour HAZWOPER certification with annual refresher (or ability to obtain/maintain).
- Forklift/material handling qualification (or ability to obtain), with experience moving containers safely.
- Familiarity with RCRA hazardous waste labeling, accumulation rules, and waste storage area inspection readiness.
