Hat Shaper (Part-Time)

About the role

Hat Shapers honor the Murdoch’s mission, values, and principles by providing exceptional customer service and performing day-to-day operations in the Clothing department. The Hat Shaper plays a critical role in carrying on the honored tradition of shaping cowboy hats with outstanding customer service. This position requires creativity with a passion for craftsmanship, strong product knowledge, a positive professional attitude, and a commitment to Murdoch’s M.V.P.’s and G.E.T.

The Hat Shaper maintains the look and feel of the department through merchandising, stocking, and accomplishing assigned tasks, with a primary focus on serving customers.

Responsibilities

• Shape hats using various techniques, tools, and equipment.
• Work with a variety of hat materials, such as felt, straw, fabric, and leather.
• Collaborate with customers to understand and meet specific customization and design preference requirements.
• Execute customizations, including brim width, crown shape, branding, and decorative elements.
• Conduct quality checks at various stages of the shaping/decorating process to ensure standards are met.
• Contribute creative ideas for hat designs and shaping techniques by staying up to date on industry trends.
• Maintain and clean shaping tools and equipment regularly.
• Report any equipment malfunctions or repair needs to the Assistant Store Manager of Clothing.
• Provide exceptional customer service with a focus on customer needs and solutions.
• Support department leads and managers to facilitate high standards in merchandising and store appearance.
• Merchandise, stock, re-stock, and recover products within the department according to Murdoch’s standards.
• Complete inventory pricing and maintenance duties.
• Develop product knowledge across the breadth of products in the department.
• Create and maintain a safe environment for customers and team members.
• Communicate effectively and build positive working relationships with team members.
• Exhibit proper radio and phone etiquette.
• Adhere to safety guidelines and protocols while working with tools and materials.
• Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
• Work with the Assistant Store Manager to develop and achieve goals.
• Perform other duties as needed throughout the store.

Requirements

• Attention to detail and a keen eye for aesthetics.
• Strong communication (written, oral, and interpersonal) and collaboration skills.
• Knowledge of safety procedures and adherence to workplace regulations.
• Strong customer service skills.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Positive attitude and demonstrated practice of learning.
• Ability to excel in a fast-paced, evolving work environment.
• Familiarity with standard concepts and practices within the retail environment.
• Strong Windows-based computer skills, especially with Microsoft products.
• Previous experience in hat shaping or a related field.

Physical Demands

• Stand for long periods of time.
• Heavy and repetitive lifting (up to 50 lbs).
• Bending, carrying, and pushing.
• Working on a ladder.
• Repetitive wrist movements on a keyboard.
• Close vision for computer work.
