About the Role
The Oregon Military Department is recruiting for a permanent, full-time Group Life Coordinator 2 position located in Bend, Oregon at the Oregon Youth Challenge High School. This role is represented by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees’ (AFSCME) union. The Oregon Military Department is dedicated to diversity efforts that reinforce respectful treatment of others in the workplace.

The Oregon Youth Challenge Program is an intensive alternative high school for "At Risk" 16–18-year-old Oregon dropouts, providing a unique educational opportunity within an intensive military structure. The program consists of a 22-week residential academic/military phase and a 12-month Post Residential phase focusing on life planning and community re-integration. The curriculum is modeled on eight core components: academic excellence, physical fitness, nutrition, community involvement, leadership and followership, health skills development, and life planning.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for the care, control, safety, and security of youth in a 24/7 facility.
- Supervise youth with emphasis on safety, personal growth, teamwork, and the program’s eight core components.
- Promote positive youth development by establishing healthy professional relationships, role-modeling desired behaviors, maintaining an exceptional uniform appearance, and ensuring a safe training environment.
- Monitor and report the behavior of cadets during daily activities, offsite community projects, academic instruction, meals, and extracurricular activities.
- Work effectively with youth who may have social, economic, emotional, or behavioral challenges.
- Assist youth in developing short- and long-term goals, overcoming obstacles, conflict resolution, and developing life skills.
- Plan, lead, and participate in daily physical fitness activities, including running and calling cadence.
- Provide classroom instruction on topics related to program standards and character development.
- Responsible for the Life Plan guidance of all students in the program.
Requirements
- Must be 21 years of age.
- Must possess a high school diploma, GED certificate, or equivalent education.
- Six months of experience observing, evaluating, developing, or understanding human performance, relations, and interactions OR a Certificate or Associate degree in behavioral science, education, criminal justice, or a related field OR six months of prior military experience, law enforcement, or corrections experience.
- Must be able to pass a physical fitness standard in accordance with program requirements.
- Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record. Out-of-state applicants must provide a 3-year driving abstract.
- Pass a fingerprint-based criminal background and abuse check.
- Pass a preemployment drug screening test and maintain a drug/alcohol-free workplace.
- Obtain and maintain CPR/First Aid Certification within 6 months of hire.
- Obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver License (CDL) within 120 days of hire.
- Maintain physical fitness standards (tested annually) and military-style grooming standards.
- Wear a modified military uniform and safety equipment as required.
- Must be able to personally “call military cadence.”
- Extensive walking, regular marching, and running with students; must be on your feet for entire 8-hour shifts.
- Must be able to transport students in State-owned vehicles.
Working Conditions
- Occasional lifting and physical exertion required.
- Occasional exposure to adverse weather and environmental conditions.
- Required to work various shifts: days, swing, graveyard, weekends, holidays, and occasional overnight travel.
- May come in contact with irate students, parents, and the general public.
- Schedule changes are frequent due to limited resources, National Guard drills, illness, or vacation.
- Participate in daily physical training, including a confidence course designed to build student confidence.
- Lead and motivate students in formations, group exercises, and group runs.

Pay
$4,736 - $5,984 per month
