VCU’s Facilities Management Department is seeking a Groundskeeper to maintain a healthy, safe, and attractive landscape on the Academic and Medical Campuses.
Responsibilities
- Sweeps and collects litter and debris from turf, landscaped areas, sidewalks, streets, and alleys using hand tools and power equipment, including litter vacuum machines.
- Empties trash cans and replaces liners for assigned exterior trash and recycling containers.
- Keeps recycling waste stream separate from landfill-bound trash.
- Reports and corrects trash and recycling container maintenance issues (e.g., stickers, graffiti, wear, or damage) in accordance with University policy.
- Supports litter collection during special events.
- Operates and maintains vehicles, tools, and equipment safely, including performing visual and fluid checks, recognizing unsafe conditions, and reporting damage or needed repairs.
- Organizes, secures, and maintains work areas, tools, and equipment in good condition.
- Enters accurate daily timecards in the computer system using correct work orders per AiM SOPs.
- Works during emergencies or University closures due to uncertain weather conditions; may be designated as "on-call."
- Operates snow removal tools and equipment (e.g., plows, spreaders, 4x4 vehicles, off-road vehicles), chainsaws, pruning tools, blowers, and mowers in normal and adverse conditions.
- Wears appropriate PPE as required by task or department policy.
- Identifies, corrects, or reports potential hazards to safe work, customers, and the public.
- Follows instructions from lead workers or supervisors; may lead a team in their absence.
- Performs other duties as assigned, including mowing, mulching, weed control, leaf collection, and snow removal.
Requirements
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Able to perform repetitive, physically demanding tasks daily.
- Able to safely operate vehicles in a congested environment.
- Able to work and communicate effectively with others.
- Able to read, write, and speak English.
- Able to use a personal computer to enter accurate timecards and charge time against multiple work requests.
- General knowledge of professional landscape maintenance practices and safe operation of grounds equipment.
- Valid Driver License required.
- Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with diverse faculty, staff, and students, or a commitment to do so.
- May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays during special events, emergencies, and inclement weather.
Preferred Qualifications
- VDACS Pesticide Registered Technician or Commercial Applicator certification in category 3A or 3B.
- At least one year of residential, commercial, municipal, park, or similar turf, horticulture, or arboriculture experience.

Pay
$37,440 per year.
Schedule
- Monday–Friday, 6:30 AM–3:00 PM.
- May be required to work overtime, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- May be needed during special events, emergencies, and inclement weather.
- May be designated as "on-call."
- 40 hours per week.
