Grounds Worker

About the Role

This position involves the maintenance of athletic fields and landscaped areas, including related work as required. The role focuses on performing semiskilled, physically demanding tasks. As experience is gained, employees may be assigned more difficult and responsible tasks.

Responsibilities

• Maintains, propagates, plants, cultivates, waters, and sprays flowers, plants, shrubs, and trees
• Sows and mows grass; prunes and trims trees, shrubs, and bushes
• Rakes and collects leaves; sprays pesticides; plants flowers; applies fertilizer
• Edges sidewalks, borders, and plant beds; trims weeds, grass, and hedges
• Operates mowers, tractors, dump trucks, and hand tools
• Assists in snow removal
• Performs related tasks as required

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
• Experience in performing general manual work
• Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license issued by the State of Tennessee
• Thorough knowledge of tools and equipment used in landscaping, construction, and maintenance work
• General mechanical ability to perform semiskilled and technical tasks
• Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions

Physical Demands

• Regular performance of heavier physical work, including walking on rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, and working in confined spaces
• Lifting or carrying moderately heavy (20-50 lbs.) items and occasionally very heavy (100 lbs. & over) items
• Operation of hand and power tools to exacting tolerances
• Full coordination of sensory and manipulative ability to achieve production standards
• Color, sound, odor, depth, visual perception, and oral communication abilities

Work Conditions

May experience discomfort due to exposure to odors, fumes, dust, and temperature variations.
