Grounds Worker

Qualifications

This position requires:

• Ability to meet the physical requirements of the job
• Knowledge of grounds keeping and landscape methods and practices
• Safe use, maintenance, and operation of grounds keeping tools and hand/motorized power equipment
• Safe use and application of pesticides and herbicides for pest/weed control purposes
• Skill to effectively and safely use hand and hand power tools associated with grounds keeping and landscape work
• Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions
• Ability to read and write at a level necessary to perform required duties successfully
• Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties
• Possession and maintenance of a valid Class "C" California Driver's License
• Submission of a recent DMV (3-year minimum) driving record with application

One year of paid experience in grounds keeping, landscape, or general labor work is preferred. The successful candidate will be trained and responsible for the Kern High School District's needs regarding asbestos and hazardous materials. A pre-employment medical assessment and a criminal history check will be required prior to employment.

Responsibilities

• Plant, cultivate, prune, shape, trim, water, and spray trees, shrubs, plants, and hedges
• Plant, fertilize, water, mow, and care for lawns
• Operate and maintain hand power tools and equipment including power mowers, power clippers, roto-tillers, and other maintenance equipment/tools
• Use hand tools to work soil and remove weeds, undergrowth, and debris from school grounds and landscaped areas
• Sweep walkways, driveways, and pick up other debris
• Rake and hoe weeds
• Apply pesticides and herbicides to grounds and garden areas for pest/weed control purposes
• Clean sprinklers and irrigation systems and assist in the installation and repair of irrigation systems
• Clean and maintain drainage areas
• Mow, drag, chalk, line, and mark athletic fields for scheduled events
• Perform general grounds maintenance work
• Maintain hoses, supplies, tools, and equipment in proper condition
• Assist with general custodial maintenance work as required
• Set up portable bleachers for athletic events and special assemblies
• Report unsafe hazards and conditions to appropriate authority
• Direct the work of student assistants or other temporary help as needed
• Perform related duties as required

Employees in this class receive supervision from a Custodial Plant Supervisor or designate within a framework of standard policies and procedures. This position performs a variety of general grounds, landscape, and maintenance duties in the upkeep of assigned school sites and related areas.

Pay

Starting salary: $3,612.29 (monthly)

Schedule

• Number of months: 12 (to begin as soon as possible)
• Daily working hours: 8 (6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.)
