Grounds Laborer

About the Role

We are seeking a Grounds Laborer to join our team, where our passion and purpose is to provide job skills training, employment opportunities, and a compassionate culture for disabled veterans and other people with disabilities. Under the direction of the Supervisor, the Grounds Laborer is responsible for the cultivation and care of landscaping and grounds on open spaces and around buildings or structures. This role may also include some janitorial work and requires maintaining cleanliness to meet company standards using appropriate supplies and equipment efficiently. Due to contract requirements, priority will be given to persons with disabilities.

Responsibilities

• Perform various groundskeeping duties, including cutting/mowing lawns using hand, power, or riding mowers.
• Trim and edge around walks, flower beds, and walls.
• Rake, prepare, and replace or lay seed or sod in needed areas.
• Landscape by planting flowers, grass, shrubs, and bushes.
• Apply fertilizer and/or pesticides to enhance growth.
• Remove stumps, fill holes, and apply grass seed as needed.
• Remove all landscaping debris.
• Cut down tree limbs that pose a danger.
• Trim shrubs and pull weeds.
• Perform minor repairs and maintenance on grounds-keeping equipment.
• Rake, mulch, and prune the grounds as needed.
• Water plants and grass, and apply fertilizer.
• Perform minor custodial/janitorial duties as assigned by the supervisor.
• Perform other duties and tasks as assigned.

Working Conditions

• Frequent exposure to heat and sun for extended periods.
• Possible exposure to chemicals, fumes, odors, and various infectious diseases.
• Exposure to wildlife.
• Possible exposure to uncomfortable noise levels and vibration of the body or extremities.

Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• High School Diploma or G.E.D.
• One year of relevant experience.
• Must be reliable, responsible, and dependable.
• Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
• Knowledge of tools, equipment, techniques, skills, materials, and methods of landscaping.
• Ability to determine the kind of tools and equipment needed for a job.
• Ability to operate or learn to operate riding mower, weed eater, grass edger, chain saw, stump grinder, hedge trimmer, leaf blower, wood chipper, lift, pressure washer, and other basic hand and power tools.

Skills

• Ability to bend, stretch, twist, or reach with your body, arms, and/or legs.
• Ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
• Ability to lift between 25-50 lbs.
• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods in inclement weather.
• Ability to work safely and efficiently.
• Ability to operate various pieces of large equipment in accordance with company procedures and safety regulations.
• Ability to make repetitive movements.
• Ability to work in awkward postures.
