About the Role

Maintain the landscape and streets of John Knox Village under supervision. Responsible for following instructions and carrying out assignments properly while supporting the Village’s mission, values, and service/hospitality (PRIDE) expectations. Completes required training hours as outlined by policy.

Responsibilities

  • Cuts lawns using hand mower or power mower.
  • Trims and edges walks, flower beds, and walls using clippers, weed cutters, and edging tools.
  • Prunes shrubs and trees; removes damaged leaves and branches using shears, pruners, or saws.
  • Cleans grounds, removes litter, and cleans gutters, drainage ditches, and culverts.
  • Spreads salt on public passageways to prevent ice buildup; shovels snow from walks and driveways. May plow or use a snow blower.
  • Available on-call for snow removal and assists with cold patch repair.
  • Plants grass, flowers, trees, and shrubs; amends beds.
  • Repairs equipment, irrigation systems, fences, gates, walls, walks, and bumper blocks; grinds and sharpens tools.
  • Performs ground maintenance duties using a tractor equipped with attachments.
  • Handles trash pickup, recycling, empties excrement bins, and manages mulching/compost.
  • Operates forklift, Bobcat, street sweeper, chainsaw, and other lawn equipment.
  • Pulls weeds; assists with leaf removal in the fall and gum ball cleanup in the spring.
  • Sprays under management license and applies fertilizers.
  • Handles work orders and moves jobs, including furniture, pianos, couches, etc.
  • Sets up for John Knox Village events.
  • Learns and implements proper watering techniques for annuals, trees, and shrubs to avoid overwatering; waters seed and sod.
  • Adheres to all safety regulations and requirements.
  • Handles workplace stress and maintains positive interactions with colleagues and customers.
  • Maintains acceptable standards of workplace conduct.

The responsibilities described represent the primary duties of the job. Other responsibilities may be assigned by the supervisor as needed.

Requirements

  • Education: High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Must obtain a Missouri Class E driver’s license or equivalent within 30 days of hire.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to multitask and follow instructions.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write simple sentences, paragraphs, and correspondence.

Special Working Conditions

  • Subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions, including extreme cold (below 32°F) and extreme heat (above 100°F) for extended periods.
  • Exposed to sufficient noise levels requiring shouting to be heard above ambient noise.
  • Subject to vibration of extremities or whole body.
  • Exposed to hazards such as moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding or high places, high heat, and chemicals.
  • Exposed to atmospheric conditions affecting the respiratory system or skin, including fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.
  • Exposed to air and/or skin contact with oils and other cutting fluids.
  • Required to wear a respirator for certain tasks.
  • Frequently works in close quarters, crawl spaces, shafts, manholes, small enclosed rooms, small sewage and water line pipes, and other claustrophia-inducing areas.
  • Required to function in narrow aisles or passageways.
  • May be called upon to assist other departments in declared emergency situations.

  • Maximum occasional lift of 50 lbs from floor to 51 inches.
  • Maximum occasional carry of 50 lbs for 100 ft.
  • Maximum occasional push horizontal force of 50 lbs at 35-inch height for 3 ft.
  • Maximum occasional push/pull vertical force of 40 lbs at 35-inch height.
  • Maximum occasional grip force of 90 lbs.
  • Maximum frequent forward reach of 40 inches.
  • Maximum occasional lateral reach of 35 inches.
  • Maximum occasional overhead reach to 80 inches.
  • Constant bending; occasional crouching/kneeling.
  • Constant neck flexion; frequent trunk rotation.
  • Frequent hand coordination; occasional foot coordination.
  • Occasional balance requirements.
  • Constant standing/walking; occasional sitting.

PDC Level: Heavy. Exposed to extremes of outdoor conditions, temperatures, and vibratory tool use.

Supervision

Receives frequent supervision from the Manager of Grounds or Grounds Coordinator. Does not provide supervision to others.

Post-offer background check and health screening required.
