About the role
The Head Cashier leads the front-end team, supports cashiers, and creates an efficient checkout experience for The Merc Co+op community.
Responsibilities
- Deliver friendly, prompt, and helpful service to every customer
- Handle customer concerns and challenging situations with professionalism
- Create a positive and welcoming front-end environment
- Support, train, and coach checkout staff
- Prioritize and delegate tasks based on store flow
- Step in as the front-end leader when the manager is not present
- Guide front-end operations to meet sales, labor, and service goals
- Monitor workflow and adjust staffing or priorities as needed
- Support process improvements and department initiatives
- Oversee register operations and ensure accurate transactions
- Aid staff with payments, refunds, and troubleshooting issues
- Follow all cash handling and accounting procedures
Requirements
- Experience with cash handling and point-of-sale systems
- Strong customer service skills
- Dependability, integrity, and accountability
- Flexible availability, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
- Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
- Comfort with basic reporting and cash reconciliation
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office and digital communication tools
Qualifications
- Full-time role (35+ hours/week)
- Requires standing and walking for most of the shift
- Involves lifting up to 50 lbs, bending, and reaching
- Work may include exposure to varying temperatures
Skills
- Leadership and supervisory experience in retail or grocery
- Training and coaching team members
- Attention to detail and multitasking ability
