Great Lakes Education Intern - ONSITE - Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge

Position Description

The proposed duties of this position will include a variety of field and office work opportunities to provide the intern with a diverse breadth of experience that could be applied to future conservation-related positions. The intern will focus primarily on delivering K-12 education programs, assisting with recreational education related to fishing and hunting, and helping to coordinate community outreach and volunteer activities.

Responsibilities

• S supporting park ranger staff in the implementation of Great Lakes environmental education programs for K-12 visitors and the general public.
• A assisting with fishing and hunting education, including instructing others in how to fish and/or hunt and how to identify appropriate species.
• H helping organize and facilitate community outreach events and volunteer opportunities.
• P participating in visitor engagement and interpretation, providing information about refuge resources and conservation efforts.
• A assisting with data entry and maintenance of records related to projects and visitor interactions.

Qualifications

• M major field of study relevant to the position, including arts, history, or education
• C completion of two or more years of college-level course work.
• K knowledge of or interest in conservation, wildlife management, or related fields.
• F knowledge of or interest in fishing and/or hunting.
• A ability to work with people of all ages.
• C strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• I ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• O willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• G good attitude and willingness to learn.

• E Interns in this program will receive 800 hours towards Public Land Corps (PLC) Hiring Authority.
• P The Public Land Corps Non-Competitive Hiring Authority is a special hiring authority available to qualifying interns. The intern must be between the ages of 18 and 30 years old, inclusive, or a veteran up to age 35 and complete 640 hours of work on an appropriate conservation project to be eligible for this hiring authority.
• P Upon successful completion of the PLC project(s), the intern is eligible for two years to be hired non-competitively into a federal seasonal, term, or permanent position.
