About the role

This position is based at the Cragwood location and involves editing and maintaining geospatial data within a GIS system, specifically for electric utility systems (not gas). The role operates in a union environment under a supervisor, processing work orders into GIS and handling print distribution of updates.

Contractors are required to be onsite every day for the first 6 to 12 weeks for training. After this period, editors may transition to a hybrid schedule (remote and onsite) based on their ability to work independently and client/work assignment requirements. Additionally, editors must commute to a secondary location once a week for print distributions.

Field work may account for 5-10% of the role, and if required, the contractor is expected to use their own vehicle.

Responsibilities

• Maintain the GIS connected model for electric utility systems using data from work management systems, as-built construction drawings, work orders, completion records, field reports, and other sources.
• Perform analysis or queries to prepare reports, tabulations, charts, and maps from asset information in the connected model and other data sources.
• Produce standard prints and ad-hoc plots for field requests based on specific information from the connected model.
• Maintain service point data and its relationship to the feeding source transformer.
• Track the lifespan of utility asset data, including history, inspections, and attachments.
• Resolve conflicting data, mapping, connectivity, and land issues through office or field investigations.
• Perform GIS work for major projects such as facility relocations, load rearrangement, and new business.
• Operate office equipment including printers, plotters, duplication machines, facsimile machines, and scanners.
• File records and data related to the work.
• Perform manual or computer-aided drafting.
• Operate a car or light truck for field work.
• Assist other employees in plant work, field work, or office tasks.
• Perform other similar skilled work as required.

Requirements

• 1-2 years of GIS experience (school or work-related).
• Experience updating, editing, or modifying geospatial data within a GIS system.
• Knowledge of how relationships work in GIS applications.
• Ability to acquire a thorough working knowledge of the company’s business applications, materials, equipment, and utility systems (Transmission and Distribution).
• Familiarity with operating and maintenance handbooks, manuals, and safety rules pertinent to the work.
• Must be able to work at various client locations based on business needs.
• Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license to operate motor vehicles in the state of New Jersey.
• Proficiency in MS Office and other Windows applications.

Experience with MicroStation or AutoCAD is a strong plus but not required. Candidates without utility experience but with GIS knowledge are encouraged to apply. Recent college graduates with GIS experience from school or internships are also welcome.

Qualifications

• 1-2 years of GIS experience in any industry, with the ability to update and edit GIS systems.
• Understanding of GIS applications and data relationships.
• Willingness to perform minimal field work using a personal vehicle if required.
• Ability to work in a union environment and report to a supervisor.
