Principal Job Functions
- Assists cardiologists and procedural physicians during invasive cardiovascular and interventional radiology procedures.
- Practices radiation and laser safety for patients, staff, and self.
- Uses sterile technique as required.
- Assists with patient positioning and preparation as directed by the physician to facilitate safe and effective procedure performance.
- Records, analyzes, and documents clinical patient information; recognizes and communicates arrhythmias; monitors arterial and/or venous pressure lines.
- Functions in the first scrub role by preparing, organizing, and anticipating needed instruments, supplies, and equipment for safe patient care for interventional radiology and invasive cardiology procedures.
- Operates non-radiographic clinical support systems associated with cardiovascular procedures, including hemodynamic monitoring systems, EMR, scheduling platforms, and documentation tools.
- Utilizes hospital and department computer systems, files, and PACS to review patient history and to provide accurate documentation of studies to include patient clinical information.
- Provides patient care and procedural support to individuals of all ages while maintaining confidentiality and dignity.
- Collaborates with medical staff, coworkers, patients, families, and other hospital staff to ensure quality patient care; shares pertinent information regarding patient conditions with physicians, nurses, and other professional staff as needed for patient care.
- Handles telephone calls for scheduling, coordination, or questions with courtesy and accuracy. Provides information to patients and families to reduce anxiety and convey an attitude of acceptance, sensitivity, and caring.
- Participates in the department's quality improvement plan as required. Initiates problem solving and conflict resolution skills to foster effective work relationships with peers.
- Cleans, disinfects, and maintains equipment as necessary; notifies supervisor of equipment problems and calls appropriate service vendors as needed.
- Keeps work area properly supplied. Assists with departmental orientation and student clinical education as directed.
- Accesses and administers drugs and biologicals that are pertinent to essential job functions in accordance with Medical Center procedures.
- Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise. Participates in meetings, committees, and department projects as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- Maintains clinical competency as required for the unit including but not limited to age-specific competencies relative to patient’s growth and developmental needs, annual skill competency verification and mandatory education and competencies.
- Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions.
- Knowledge of patient positioning and radiation safety principles applicable to working in a fluoroscopy-guided procedural environment.
- Knowledge of applicable healthcare regulations and hospital policies related to invasive cardiovascular and interventional radiology procedures.
- Knowledge of anatomy and pathophysiology related to interventional radiology and invasive cardiology procedures.
- Knowledge of techniques and supplies required for interventional procedures.
- Knowledge of radiologic and cardiovascular equipment, image capture devices, PACS, and other related systems.
- Ability to react appropriately and perform work effectively under stressful and emergent situations.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment related to changing patient conditions.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
