As a Driller Assistant, you will work on a drilling team to operate various drill rigs, collecting soil and rock samples for geotechnical engineering purposes. Responsibilities
- Assist with soil drilling, rock coring, soil/rock sampling, classifications, in-situ testing, and monitoring well installation
- Assist in the operations of various drilling rigs
- Operate support vehicle equipment
- Assist the Driller in manipulating, loading, and unloading drill rig tooling
- Interact with geotechnical engineers and project managers to understand drilling assignments and relay field information
- Prepare tooling and supplies for daily tasks
- Assist in assembling and disassembling drill tooling, including solid-flight augers, hollow-stem augers, rock core barrel assembly kits, Shelby tube samplers, and split-spoon samples
- Assist with the identification of boring locations using GPS equipment
- Retrieve and log soil/rock samples
- Clean and maintain equipment, and assist with site cleanup responsibilities
- Adhere to safety practices and policies to ensure personal and team safety
Requirements
- Ability to communicate and interact effectively in verbal and written communication
- Basic math skills
- Ability to receive work instructions and follow tasks
- Must be able to work off shifts and overtime
- Must be able to travel up to 5% of the time
- Valid Driver’s License and reliable driving record
Preferred Qualifications
- High school education or equivalent
- Experience assisting with drilling operations (preferred but not required—training will be provided)
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift, move, push, and pull up to 50 pounds frequently; occasionally over 50 pounds with assistance
- Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and make sound discriminations
- Ability to kneel and squat occasionally
- Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time
- Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions (hot and cold) for the majority of the day
- Ability to climb occasionally
