This job opening is being used to fill current and future vacant positions in this classification at various shifts, locations, and assigned days off. Selection is made on the basis of fitness and ability with preference given to: Maintenance and Construction District, System-Wide (L689), Authority-Wide, and external candidates, respectively.
About the role
The General Transit Bus Garage Mechanic performs skilled vehicle maintenance, including troubleshooting, disassembly, repair, assembly, and installation of automotive/diesel engines, transmissions, large and small electric/pneumatic/hydraulic components, chassis, and vehicle body repairs for bus and automotive fleets. This role ensures the operation, maintenance, and repair of WMATA’s vehicles and equipment.
Twelve months after achieving a particular grade level (i.e., Grades D, C, B, A, and AA), employees advance to the next grade level upon passing required written and practical tests, acquiring applicable certifications, and meeting other requirements.
Responsibilities
- Perform basic to complex maintenance on WMATA vehicles to ensure safety and reliability of parts and equipment, following established procedures and maintenance standards.
- Conduct major repairs on vehicle components, analyzing and correcting special or new problems to maintain safe operations.
- Perform major engine work, including technical diagnostics, to ensure operational continuity and reliability.
- Adhere to safety and maintenance practices and procedures, complying with safety regulations and conducting all activities safely.
- Use test equipment and specialized tools associated with the job, following applicable codes and standards.
- Complete required documentation and reports using proper forms and tags.
- Respond to and assist in emergencies, such as securing vehicles, fire/life/safety incidents, and snow emergencies, to support WMATA’s transit goals and customer service.
- Perform tasks involving heavy physical labor, working various hours, locations, and days as required.

Knowledge
- Thorough knowledge of WMATA’s hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of troubleshooting and interpreting maintenance manuals and schematics.
Skills
- Maintain and promote awareness of safety policies and procedures.

- Skilled in disassembling and reassembling systems for effective component replacement.
- Skilled in arc welding repairs.

- Skilled in reading and interpreting schematics, diagrams, operations manuals, and maintenance instructions.

- Ability to rapidly obtain knowledge of WMATA’s safety and maintenance rules and regulations.
- Ability to complete vehicle/maintenance reports and other required documentation.

Qualifications
Education
- High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
- Vocational or technical mechanical training in transit bus, automotive, medium/heavy truck, or school bus maintenance.
- The following vocational/technical training can substitute for two (2) years of full-time work experience:
- Three (3) years of high school mechanical training;
- Two (2) years of tech school mechanical training; or
- Two (2) years of college mechanical training.
Experience
- Two (2) years as a Garage Mechanic or related experience.
Certification/Licensure
- Technical Certification/Licenses in Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or Military Occupational Specialty code (MOSC) for military experience in a related field.
- Must pass all required ASE and WMATA certification tests following new hire training.
- Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or CDL Learner’s Permit from jurisdiction of residence is required prior to appointment with proper endorsements (for Level D new hires only).
- No more than 4 points and 1 moving violation in the past 24 months.
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) from jurisdiction of residence is required within 90 calendar days of promotion/appointment, with Passenger bus, Air Brake, and tow truck operations endorsements (all levels).
- Intra-State Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger, Air Brake, and tow truck operations endorsements is accepted with a provisional appointment valid until the age of 21.
Level D Qualifications
- One (1) current ASE certification in one field (Transit Bus, Automotive, Medium/Heavy Truck, or School Bus).
- Military Occupational Skills Course (MOSC) certifications in a related field.
- Associate’s degree in Automotive Technology.
- Automotive Manufacturer-specific certifications.
- Two (2) years of vocational training in transit bus, automotive, medium/heavy truck, or school bus maintenance from an accredited school recognized by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC).
