About the role
The position of General School Assistant provides instructional and non-instructional support in the school setting, assisting staff as they focus on instructional initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Work under the direct supervision of certificated, administrative, or classified staff based on assigned duties
- Provide support to teachers with materials, supplies, and copying
- Monitor and assist student progress within a classroom setting
- Work with individual students or small groups as directed by a certificated staff member
- Record observations and data regarding student progress as directed
- Assist with school activities, including before- and after-school programs
- Accompany students on field trips and other outings
- Attend staff meetings and participate in required professional development
- Work with English Language Learners, understanding their unique needs
- Provide support in office or general school settings
- Assist in elementary school health clinics as assigned by the nurse
- Enter student records as needed
- Support a diverse student population
- Provide clerical and other support in school offices or non-classroom settings
- Supervise students in non-classroom settings, including lunchrooms, playgrounds, and crosswalks
- Supervise parking lots as required
- Collaborate with other staff members as required
- Handle interruptions, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, and remain flexible under pressure
Requirements
- High school graduation or equivalent
- One of the following:
- ETS Paraeducator Assessment
- Associate of Arts degree (original transcripts)
- 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits from an institution of higher education (original transcripts)
- Completion of a registered apprenticeship program (certificate)
- Foreign degrees accepted if evaluated by a NACES member company
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in a school setting
- Associate degree or equivalent
Knowledge
- Basic academic knowledge in core content areas with a focus on math and reading
- Understanding of child development basics
- Awareness of cultural and racial diversity
- Basic computer skills, including keyboarding and data entry
- Understanding of basic safety and emergency procedures, hygiene, and cleanliness

Physical Requirements
- Stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions
- Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds frequently, and negligible force constantly
- May be exposed to moving mechanical parts, odors, chemicals, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, and intense noises
Pay
AISP pay range P1-A: $24.66 to $26.61 per hour (starting rate $24.66 per hour), based on the negotiated collective bargaining agreement.
Schedule
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday: 8:35 AM to 3:50 PM
Wednesday: 8:40 AM to 1:40 PM
32 hours per week for a 192-day annual assignment.
