About the Facility

Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH) is committed to the health and wellness of the 85,000 residents across the region, providing personalized and comprehensive care. The hospital offers 24/7 emergency and trauma care, along with specialized units for intensive care, acute medical conditions, renal dialysis, and neonatal intensive care. KBRH serves as the regional hub for high-acuity cases, supported by a 24-hour High Acuity Response Team (HART).

The hospital’s dedicated specialists cover a wide range of disciplines, including ophthalmology, otolaryngology, orthopedic surgery, pediatrics, plastic surgery, psychiatry, urology, general surgery, obstetrics & gynecology, neurology, oncology, and internal medicine. About the Role

Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital is recruiting a Canadian Royal College certified General Pathologist or a board-certified anatomic and clinical pathologist (AP/CP) for a three-person practice. The group handles approximately 8,500 surgical pathology cases annually.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • General surgical pathology and cytology case sign-out
  • Clinical pathology case sign-out (e.g., peripheral blood smears, bone marrow biopsies)
  • Transfusion medicine and local laboratory oversight
  • Opportunity for medical directorship of rural area labs

Autopsies are not currently performed at this site. The ideal candidate will have recent clinical pathology experience, with strong skills in surgical pathology, laboratory diagnostics, transfusion medicine, and hematopathology. Comfort with independent practice in a small group environment is essential. Daily quality assurance videoconferences are conducted with other Interior Health pathologists to discuss interesting or difficult cases. Intramural or extramural consultation for challenging cases is readily available, including access to academic medical centers in Vancouver.

This position requires strong interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate effectively with laboratory staff, clinicians, and administration.

Requirements

  • Canadian Royal College certification in General Pathology or board certification in anatomic and clinical pathology (AP/CP)
  • Recent clinical pathology experience
  • Strong skills in surgical pathology, laboratory diagnostics, transfusion medicine, and hematopathology
  • Ability to practice independently in a small group setting
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Pay

Estimated remuneration ranges from $380,812 to $423,125 based on a provincially negotiated salary grid: 90% in year 1, 95% in year 2, and 100% from year 3 onward.

Benefits and Incentives

  • Eligibility for additional remuneration under the Rural Subsidiary Agreement (RSA), including:
    • Retention Premium: 11.48%
    • Retention Flat Fee: $17,790
    • Relocation Funding: $9,000–$15,000 based on move location
    • Recruitment Incentive: $15,000
  • Continuing Medical Education (CME) funding: $600 for up to 2 years in Trail, $3,600 during the 3rd and 4th year, and $6,600 after 4 years, in addition to Doctors of BC CME funds

Rural incentives are subject to change, with current rates confirmed at the time of offer.
