About the role

As a General Merchandise Team Leader, you’ll enable a consistent guest experience by overseeing operations, process, and efficiency in General Merchandise (GM) areas. Teams in GM prioritize guest experience while ensuring product availability and ease of shopping through replenishment, pricing, signing, setting, and maintaining the sales floor and backroom. You’ll also execute inbound, outbound, and fulfillment responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver a consistent guest experience by ensuring team members understand and meet Target’s guest experience commitments and operational standards
  • Observe and provide feedback to team members, holding them accountable while recognizing great guest experience moments
  • Review guest, financial, and team outcome metrics to identify opportunities, drive improvements, and celebrate wins
  • Lead daily/weekly workload execution to meet department and store sales goals, including receiving products, merchandising, signing, setting, and updating sales floor displays, sampling, restocking, and price changes
  • Educate team members on how operational procedures (e.g., inventory management, stock levels, sales floor maintenance) impact store profitability and product availability
  • Assess reporting to identify gaps in GM processes and assist in developing resolution plans
  • Assign daily tasks based on workload and guest traffic patterns, aligning with business priorities
  • Help establish clear goals and expectations, holding team members accountable with guidance from your direct leader
  • Lead pick, pack, and ship fulfillment work accurately (if applicable) and assess reporting to identify gaps
  • Ensure product is in stock, accurately priced, and signed on the sales floor while prioritizing guest experience
  • Collaborate with teams to ensure the store is guest-ready, aligning with leadership direction
  • Stay informed about trends and products, relaying Target communications during team connections
  • Evaluate candidates for open positions and develop a guest-centric team through onboarding, coaching, and development
  • Support guest services, including back-up cashier and digital fulfillment, while maintaining compliance
  • Demonstrate inclusivity, ethical conduct, and adherence to safety procedures
  • Lead and model a safety culture, including hazard identification, incident response, and injury reporting
  • Support merchandise protection strategies, including ordering, storage, and application of best practices
  • Occasionally assume store-level leadership on duty (LOD) responsibilities to enable the guest experience
  • Address all store emergency and compliance needs

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Age 18 or older
  • Previous retail experience preferred but not required
  • Ability to lead and hold others accountable
  • Effective communication skills, including use of frequency devices, handheld scanners, and other technology
  • Capability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to manage workload and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Welcoming and helpful attitude toward guests and team members
  • Access all areas of the building to respond to guest or team member issues
  • Ability to interpret instructions, reports, and information
  • Handle cash register operations as needed
  • Climb up and down ladders
  • Scan, handle, and move merchandise efficiently and safely, including lifting up to 44 pounds without assistance
  • Flexible work schedule (nights, weekends, holidays, closing shifts, and peak shopping times)
  • Reliable and prompt attendance; hours may fluctuate based on business needs (no guarantee of 40 hours per week)
  • Capability to work in varying temperatures, humidity, and other elements (e.g., Drive-Up, carryout)
  • Ability to remain mobile for the duration of a scheduled shift (shift length may vary)
