General Labor

About the role

A laborer works on various tasks as assigned, including general housekeeping, metal processing, upgrading, and assisting technical workers. The role offers opportunities to learn new skills, progress to more technical tasks, and become more independent. Work is performed in all weather conditions.

Responsibilities

• Unloading pallets, boxes, and bundles
• Material handling and sorting, including pushing, pulling, picking, lifting, carrying, and filling hoppers, boxes, and conveyor belts
• Unpacking boxes using box cutters and separating plastics, zip ties, blister packs, and other packaging materials
• Disassembling small equipment, cutting wires, torqueing pipefittings, removing bolts, automobile parts, and appliance parts
• Working with recycling equipment for processing metal (e.g., metal shears, band saw, and wire strippers)
• Directing traffic of yard vehicles traveling through the yard
• Light facility maintenance, including painting, scraping, moving furniture and equipment
• Maintenance tasks such as selecting and using tools properly, pulling and installing parts for machinery, and assisting with machinery repair
• Housekeeping duties, including sweeping, cleaning, shoveling, and debris collection
• Moderate and periodic landscaping work
• Cleaning up the work area at the end of the shift and keeping work areas neat and orderly
• Organizing materials for more effective use of space
• Disposing of various waste materials appropriately
• Inspecting work areas to ensure cleanup is completed for safety and hygiene
• Complying with all applicable federal, state, local, and company safety, health, and environmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures

Requirements

• Employees in this position prior to April 2014 are presumed qualified and "grandfathered" into their positions
• Must pass a medical physical and drug test
• Must pass a background check
• Preferred: High school diploma or GED (or foreign education equivalent)
• Bilingual (English & Spanish) language skills are a plus
• Ability to communicate effectively, understand directions (written or oral), and use basic math skills as required
• Willingness to learn how to sort metal, identify colors, shapes, and weights, properly maintain equipment, and utilize PPE
