Mission or Goal of Unit

The Division of General Internal Medicine aims to provide excellent, evidence-based and efficient patient care. It also focuses on effective supervision, teaching, and mentoring of Internal Medicine housestaff and students.

Chief Purpose of this position

The Division of General Internal Medicine seeks a General Internist who can join an outstanding group of clinician educators. This position offers opportunities for both outpatient and inpatient clinical care, tailored to the individual candidate’s interests.

Teaching Duties & Responsibilities

  • Supervise and teach housestaff in the resident outpatient practice, if part of desired duties
  • Supervise and teach learners (including medical students, interns, and residents) on the inpatient housestaff teaching service, if part of desired duties
  • If working on the inpatient teaching service, conduct daily teaching rounds using contemporary adult learning methods to promote evidence-based practice
  • Demonstrate effective teaching skills and continually develop as a teacher for learners at all levels
  • Complete required evaluations of learners in a timely manner, including but not limited to written and verbal feedback
  • Participate in other learning activities such as morning report, core conference, and other formal educational programs for undergraduate and post-graduate learners

Research

Participate in clinical and educational research, according to skills, interest, and funding (research opportunities may include performance improvement initiatives or formal extramurally funded investigations)

Service

  • Work with institutional staff and administration to attain the strategic objectives of VCU Health System, including patient safety, patient and other customer satisfaction, maintenance and enhancement of public perception, and fiscal health

Clinical

  • Provide direct clinical care to ambulatory patients
  • Provide direct clinical care to hospitalized patients, if inpatient work is part of the candidate’s desired clinical duties (determined by mutual agreement with Division Chief)
  • Participate in night and weekend on-call duties (telephone call only; no in-hospital responsibilities), shared among Division faculty
  • Comply in a timely manner with all institutional policies for professional work, including credentialing, documentation, and billing
  • Work effectively with other members of the extended inter-professional team
