About the Role

Positions in this class are assigned to the local school to assist the administration in maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for the school community. Under the general supervision of the security team leader, assists in screening visitor access to school facilities, maintaining student class attendance, and other responsibilities related to school security operations. Receives guidance and assistance from the security team leader on more difficult or unusual situations.

Responsibilities

  • Screen visitor access to school facilities
  • Maintain student class attendance
  • Assist in school security operations
  • Patrol school premises, including outdoors in inclement and extreme weather conditions
  • Intervene in fights and physically restrain persons when necessary
  • Follow school and MCPS policies and procedures on student attendance, suspension, student involvement, and standards of student behavior
  • Communicate effectively with students and staff regarding safety and security matters
  • Work harmoniously with staff and students under team leader supervision

Requirements

  • High School or GED diploma (Associate’s degree preferred)
  • College coursework in criminology, law enforcement, or related fields
  • Experience in work involving the welfare and safety of students or others, preferably in an educational environment
  • Experience in investigation (desirable)
  • Experience in safety and security of persons and property, preferably as a police officer
  • Valid Maryland class C noncommercial driver’s license, or equivalent
  • First aid and CPR certification
  • Sufficient physical strength and stamina for patrol duties, including restraining individuals and working outdoors in extreme weather
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and occasional overtime
  • Willingness to wear designated security uniforms

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of procedures and practices for ensuring the safety and welfare of others
  • Knowledge of behavior management techniques
  • Knowledge of security practices and procedures
  • Knowledge of investigative procedures (desirable)
  • Ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of school and MCPS policies and procedures
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong human relations skills and ability to work harmoniously with staff and students
  • Knowledge of the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS)
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred

Pay

The wage range for this position is between $24.45 and $34.82 per hour, based on years of service.

Schedule

  • Full-time
  • 10-month working period
  • Day shift
  • Flexible hours, including weekends and occasional overtime as assigned
