About the Role
Positions in this class are primarily assigned to the local school to assist the administration in maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for the school community. Under the general supervision of the security team leader, responsibilities include screening visitor access to school facilities, maintaining student class attendance, and other school security operations. Receives guidance from the security team leader and/or cluster security coordinator on complex or unusual situations. May also assist cluster security coordinators in providing school-based security/safety services and emergency preparedness readiness under the Department of Systemwide Safety and Emergency Management.
Responsibilities
- Screen visitor access to school facilities.
- Maintain student class attendance records.
- Assist in school security operations and emergency preparedness readiness.
- Intervene in fights and physically restrain persons when necessary.
- Patrol school premises, including outdoor areas in inclement and extreme weather conditions.
- Communicate effectively with students and staff regarding attendance, behavior, and security protocols.
- Wear designated security uniforms and adhere to assigned work schedules, including weekends and occasional overtime.
- Use personal transportation to travel to multiple locations as required (mileage reimbursed per MCPS practices).
Requirements
- High School diploma or GED (Associate’s degree preferred).
- College coursework in criminology, law enforcement, or related fields.
- Experience in safety and security of persons and property, preferably in an educational environment or as a police officer.
- Experience in investigation is desirable.
- Valid Maryland Class C noncommercial driver’s license or equivalent.
- First aid and CPR certification.
Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of safety and welfare procedures, behavior management techniques, and security practices.
- Familiarity with investigative procedures is desirable.
- Ability to rapidly learn school and MCPS policies on student attendance, suspension, behavior, and security standards.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to work harmoniously with staff and students.
- Knowledge of the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
- Physical strength and stamina to intervene in altercations, patrol for long periods, and work outdoors in extreme weather.
Pay
The wage range for this position is $25.24 to $36.67 per hour, based on years of service.
Schedule
- Full-time, 10-month position.
- Day shift.
- Flexible hours, including weekends, as assigned for maximum security coverage.
- Occasional overtime required.
