About the Role
Positions in this class are assigned to the local school to assist the administration in maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for the school community. Under the general supervision of the security team leader, responsibilities include screening visitor access to school facilities, maintaining student class attendance, and other tasks related to school security operations. Guidance and assistance from the security team leader are provided for more difficult or unusual situations.
Responsibilities
- Assist in screening visitor access to school facilities.
- Maintain student class attendance records.
- Support school security operations and patrols.
- Intervene in fights and physically restrain persons when necessary.
- Patrol school premises, including outdoor areas in inclement and extreme weather conditions.
- Work flexible hours, including weekends and occasional overtime, to provide maximum security coverage.
- Wear the designated security uniform.
- Communicate effectively with students, staff, and security team members.
- Adhere to school and MCPS policies on student attendance, behavior, and security standards.
Requirements
- High School diploma or GED (Associate’s degree preferred).
- College coursework in criminology, law enforcement, or related fields is beneficial.
- Experience in roles involving the welfare and safety of students or others, preferably in an educational environment.
- Experience in safety and security of persons and property, preferably as a police officer.
- Investigative experience is desirable.
- Valid Maryland Class C noncommercial driver’s license or equivalent.
- First aid and CPR certification.
- Sufficient physical strength and stamina for patrols, interventions, and long periods of walking/standing.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of safety procedures and practices for ensuring the welfare of others.
- Knowledge of behavior management techniques.
- Familiarity with security practices and procedures.
- Understanding of investigative procedures (desirable).
- Ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of school and MCPS policies on student attendance, behavior, and security.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong human relations and teamwork abilities.
- Ability to work harmoniously with staff and students under supervision.
- Knowledge of the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
Skills
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
- Effective communication with diverse groups.
- Problem-solving in security-related situations.
Pay
The wage range for this position is between $25.24 and $36.67 per hour, based on years of service.
Schedule
- Full-time, 10-month position.
- Day shift.
- Flexible hours, including weekends and occasional overtime, as assigned.
