Purpose, Scope & Dimension of Job

Faculty facilitate student learning and initiate and participate in efforts to consistently improve the level of student success. As learning facilitators, faculty consistently assess learning outcomes and their own teaching effectiveness. As professionals, faculty adhere to the ethical standards of their profession as outlined, for example, by the NEA and the State of Michigan. Where applicable, faculty maintain licensure and certifications.

Specific Teaching Assignment

Faculty members will be responsible for teaching classes in specified areas of biology. Priority will be given to applicants with a background and expertise in the General Biology, Microbiology, and Anatomy & Physiology areas for both major and non-major students.

Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Master's degree or higher in Biology or related sub-discipline from an accredited institution with a minimum of 18 graduate credits in courses specific to biology.
• Understanding of and commitment to community college teaching, mission and philosophy.
• Innovative, flexible, positive, and equity-minded teaching style and understanding the needs of students from diverse backgrounds.
• Ability to teach effectively in multiple teaching modalities including face to face, hybrid, hyflex, and fully online.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

• Academic experience which includes work, research, study or teaching in multiple areas of biology is desirable.
• Recent teaching experience in Microbiology lecture and laboratory courses.
• An interest in developing new courses and programs.
• Demonstrated familiarity with the Canvas course management system, and the Microsoft Office and Google Suite software packages.
• Evidence of continuing professional development in biology.

Physical Requirements

• The employee must be able to move about 2/3 of the time and be stationary about 1/3 of the time.
• Required to be mobile around campus for participant involvement/activities.
• Must be able to converse with individuals on a regular basis with the ability to read, analyze, and interpret their needs via phone conversations, face-to-face conversations, or written documentation.
• Must be able to use college-approved learning management systems and computer programs.
• Must be able to present information in an instructional setting and respond to questions from groups.
• If applicable, must be able to tolerate frequent exposure to a wide variety of chemicals which are common to the industry.
• Must be able to handle and mix chemicals properly and safely; and wear appropriate gloves.

Work Schedule

Full-time faculty are obligated to teach during fall and winter, but are not required to teach in the summer semester. Faculty are required to maintain student communications/engagement as necessary. Full-time faculty are required to perform many of their professional responsibilities year-round even if they are not teaching in the summer. Mott Community College recognizes that remote work can benefit the student, employee and College and will permit employee duties to be performed remotely when it is appropriate, reasonable and feasible based on the College's mission and priorities. MCC employees follow a well-defined remote work program. The opportunity for remote work is reviewed on a case by case basis and dependent on many factors including the nature of the job duties and person's suitability for remote work. All hybrid work opportunities are approved by the immediate supervisor and Executive member.
