(Part-time) Biology Instructor

About the Role

The Shasta-Tehama-Trinity Community College District seeks part-time college instructors to teach classes and contribute to continuous improvement of instruction, student success, and the college’s mission. Instructors will work under administrative leadership in a collaborative, equity-focused environment serving a diverse student population.

Pay

Temporary Part-time Instructors are compensated a salaried flat rate ranging from $59.19 to $84.20 per clock hour taught each semester, in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.

Responsibilities

Classroom Responsibilities

• Meet classes/laboratories as assigned within the academic calendar, including intersessions and summer sessions.
• Develop and implement instruction for each class and laboratory period, consistent with the official course outline and District guidelines.
• Maintain online course components for online and hybrid courses, including asynchronous or synchronous content delivery.
• Provide regular student-student and student-instructor contact for online and hybrid courses.
• Develop and distribute a syllabus during the first week of class, outlining course description, objectives, grading, testing, attendance, and other requirements per District guidelines.
• Provide regular, timely feedback to students and return graded work promptly.
• Assign final grades in compliance with District policy, administrative procedures, California Education Code, and Title 5.
• Demonstrate respect for student rights as specified in District policy and applicable laws.
• Submit requisitions for textbooks and instructional materials in a timely manner, considering student cost.
• Refer students to tutoring and related student services when appropriate.
• Supervise students in off-campus activities when required as part of a course or instructor’s load.
• Provide academic assistance and related services to students during scheduled office hours.
• Participate in professional development to remain current in the assigned discipline.
• Submit required administrative paperwork, including student learning outcomes, accurately and on time.
• Fulfill discipline-specific classroom responsibilities as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities

• Participate in the evaluation process as described in the faculty collective bargaining agreement.
• Continue developing professional skills and remain current in subject matter knowledge.
• Keep and submit official records required by District policy and administrative procedures.
• Abide by District policies concerning property and safety.
• Report absences due to illness or personal necessity to the supervising administrator.
• Recommend purchases of instructional supplies and equipment as needed.
• Fulfill all obligations established in the current collective bargaining agreement.

Optional Activities (Eligible for Flex Pay or Stipends)

• Schedule and maintain office hours, clearly communicated to students and division staff.
• Participate in participatory governance through District committees.
• Engage in the curriculum review process and develop new courses in response to student or community needs.
• Participate in program review and annual planning within established cycles.
• Attend and participate in department and division meetings.
• Assess learning outcomes and participate in learning outcomes processes.
• Participate in required professional development activities to improve pedagogy and student success.

• Ability to design and deliver courses in different modalities (e.g., in-person, online, hybrid).
• Ability to participate in recruitment and articulation activities with local schools, colleges, and universities.

• Demonstrated ability to maintain subject matter currency.
• Ability to assess student learning outcomes.
• Knowledge of and willingness to explore new technologies and teaching practices benefiting students and programs.
• Sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical and learning disabilities.
• Knowledge of and commitment to the California community college mission.

Education and Experience

Education Required:

• Master’s in any biological science, or
• Bachelor’s in any biological science and Master’s in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science, or
• Equivalent qualifications.

Experience Required:

• Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students, including those with physical and/or learning disabilities.

Equivalency Qualifications

Applicants who do not meet the minimum education requirements may qualify through equivalency if they can demonstrate equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities. The Shasta College Academic Senate has established standards for equivalency. Candidates must formally request equivalency consideration, provide a cover letter summarizing qualifications, and submit relevant evidence. The Equivalency Committee will review applications and approve or disapprove equivalency based on established guidelines.
