Fuels Technician III

Hourly wage: $18.23 (regular/furlough position within the Department of Natural Resources, Fuels Management Program).

Responsibilities

• Assist the Fuels Manager in planning, directing, implementing, and monitoring fuels management activities that protect, maintain, or restore natural resources on the Yakama Reservation.
• Perform Hazardous Fuels Reduction (HFR) treatment layout in Yakama Nation forested areas.
• Administer and monitor HFR contract work, including thinning, hand and machine piling.
• Conduct HFR pre- and post-treatment plot data collection.
• Assist the Fuels Manager and Planner in planning and implementing field activities to protect, maintain, and enhance natural resources.
• Coordinate activities with the Bureau of Indian Affairs Branch of Forestry and related tribal programs under the Division of Natural Resources, including:
  • Data collection
  • Timber stand improvement (slashing/pre-commercial thinning)
  • GIS mapping
  • Mechanical fuels treatment
  • Prescribed burning
• Collect field data for fuels management projects, compile resource data, prepare summaries, generate graphs, and create maps of project areas.
• Monitor, conduct surveys, and perform treatment layout using technical field equipment (GPS, iPad, Avenza) to assist GIS specialists with mapping and ensure proper application of Fuels Management prescriptions.
• Assist in preparing training programs and conduct on-the-job training for crewmembers on technical resource survey and data collection applications.
• Participate in wildfire suppression and pre-suppression activities, including attending firefighter training courses.
• Operate tribal or federally owned/leased motor vehicles.
• Abide by Yakama Nation Rules and Regulations.
• Lead administrative work on contracts, including layout, implementation, and post-monitoring.

Requirements

• Two years of Forestry or Fuels Technician II experience.
• Three years of wildland firefighting experience.
• Ability to pass the National Wildfire Coordinating Group national standard fitness test for arduous work level.
• FFT1 certification and qualification as a Single Resource Boss or trainee.
• Completion of S-230 (Single Resource) and S-290 (Advanced Fire Weather) courses.
• Valid Washington State Driver’s License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving permit.
• Pass a pre-employment drug test.

Preferred Qualifications

• Enrolled Yakama preference (all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply).

Skills

• Knowledge of Fuels Management practices, including mechanical fuels reduction, prescribed burning, timber stand improvement, and other activities to protect, maintain, or enhance natural resources.
• Knowledge of Forest Management practices on the Yakama Reservation, including even and uneven-aged management practices.
• Knowledge of data collection procedures.
• Ability to interpret, analyze, and summarize data.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and co-workers.
