Pay

• Starting annual salary: $64,032.93 ($30.79/hour)

Requirements

• At least 21 years of age at the time of appointment
• High school diploma or equivalent (12th grade completion)
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Utah driver’s license
• Possession of a P.O.S.T. category I or II certificate or an associate degree with emphasis in law enforcement (desired but not mandatory)

Responsibilities

• Observe, record, and react to situations quickly and calmly
• Act with tact and impartiality when dealing with the public and fellow officers
• Develop skills in the use of firearms and operation of police vehicles
• Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
• Exhibit imagination, initiative, and problem-solving in law enforcement situations
• Develop knowledge of:
  • Initial investigative techniques (crime scene preservation, interview, and interrogation)
  • Traffic control and report writing
  • Police emergency procedures
  • State and local laws and ordinances
• Pursue, subdue, and apprehend hostile or combative subjects
• React productively to changing tasks and assignments
• Use and properly care for firearms
• Understand, interpret, and apply laws, regulations, policies, and procedures
• Prepare clear, accurate, and grammatically correct reports
• Analyze situations quickly to determine and take emergency action
• Identify potential crime or traffic hazards and take preventative action
• Meet first aid requirements as prescribed by the State of Utah
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
• Work all shifts

Physical Fitness Requirements

Must meet Utah P.O.S.T. physical fitness standards for certification. Employees must pass a department-administered physical fitness test battery and retest at least annually.

• Aerobic power: Perform essential pursuit and use-of-force situations involving sustained effort
• Anaerobic power: Perform essential pursuit, extraction, and use-of-force situations involving short intense effort
• Upper body and abdominal muscular endurance: Perform pursuit, lifting, carrying, and extraction
• Upper body absolute strength: Perform essential lifting, pushing, and pulling
• Explosive leg power: Perform pursuit, lifting, carrying, and extraction
