Front of House Associate

Reports to: Guest Experience Manager | Pay Rate: $16.50/hour

About the role

Front of House Associates are essential to creating a smooth, welcoming, and memorable experience for all Central Square Theater guests. As the first point of contact for patrons, they play a key role in the flow of audience traffic before, during, and after performances—including walk-ins, late seating, and intermission. Ideal candidates are friendly, dependable, customer-service oriented, and eager to gain hands-on experience in a professional theater environment.

Responsibilities

Team members will be cross-trained in multiple areas—including Box Office, Ambassador, concessions, and house operations—to allow for flexible scheduling and to support all aspects of Front of House needs. This role requires adaptability, teamwork, and a commitment to excellent customer service.

• Welcoming patrons into the space and ensuring a warm and positive experience for guests
• Setting up and ensuring the cleanliness of the lobby, restrooms, and theater
• Assisting with late seating and opening/closing the house for performances

Box Office

• Keeping the box office tidy
• Printing and organizing Will Call tickets
• Greeting guests and distributing hard tickets
• Validating parking
• Utilizing AudienceView to check or resolve any issues that arise
• Conducting walk-up sales and answering questions

Ambassador

• Scanning tickets
• Directing guests to restrooms, concessions, lobby, or theater
• Ensuring guest flow during pre-show, intermission, and post-show
• Assisting with set-up of donation kiosk

Concessions

• Operating an iPad with the POS system Square
• Engaging with customers and taking orders
• Handling money and products
• Counting cash and depositing proceeds
• Restocking products, doing inventory, and notifying the Front of House Coordinator of low or out-of-stock items
• Ensuring the cleanliness and organization of the concessions area

House Manager

• Overseeing the opening and closing of the lobby and house
• Moving throughout the space during the show to check on guest satisfaction, FOH staff, and general operations
• Communicating with the Stage Management team to ensure smooth transitions between house and lobby
• Writing a Front of House report for each show detailing significant information from the performance
• Closing the lobby/theater
• Training volunteer ushers
• Assisting with any other tasks that may arise

Requirements

• Willingness to learn great customer service skills and ability to maintain calm under pressure
• Appreciation for theatre
• TIPS or SERVE SAFE certification is required for working Concessions (will be provided if not possessed)
• Bystander Intervention and Harassment training will be provided
• Night and weekend availability is a necessity
• Must attend Front of House meetings and dress rehearsals (held the Wednesday before an opening)
• Minimum of two to three shifts per week of availability
• Weekday morning availability (Tuesday–Thursday) is a plus for occasional student matinees

Central Square Theater is dedicated to the exploration of social justice, science, and feminine perspective through theater. Through award-winning productions, the Catalyst Collaborative@ MIT Science Theater Initiative, and youth development programming, CST creates theater where points of view are heard, perspectives shift, and change can happen.

Created collaboratively 17 years ago by Underground Railway and The Nora Theaters, Central Square Theater is the oldest female-led theater organization in the Greater Boston area, under the leadership of Executive Director Catherine Carr Kelly, Co-Artistic Director Lee Mikeska Gardner, and Director of Education and Community Initiatives Kortney Adams. With a combined history of 50 years of work, CST engages over 35,000 people annually through live performance, rigorous youth education, and community programs.
