Front End Engineer (UI/UX)

The Senior Software Developer position at GDIT is a pivotal role within the Software Engineering family, focused on leading the development and strategic direction of frontend engineering practices. The successful candidate will serve as a technical authority, guiding the design, implementation, and modernization of accessible, high-performance web applications tailored for government clients. This role demands a proactive leader capable of establishing frontend standards, mentoring engineers, and influencing cross-functional teams to adopt best practices in UI/UX, accessibility, and performance optimization. The Senior Software Developer will collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and backend teams to deliver innovative solutions that meet user needs and compliance standards such as Section 508 and WCAG.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of related experience in frontend development and software engineering
• Proven expertise in architecting and delivering large-scale, accessible web applications using React and/or Angular
• Strong knowledge of modern JavaScript/TypeScript and web platform APIs
• Experience with frontend build tools such as Webpack, Vite, npm, pnpm, or similar
• Deep understanding of web accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA, Section 508) and practical implementation experience including accessibility testing tools like axe-core and eslint-pluginjsx-a11y
• Hands-on experience with automated frontend testing frameworks such as Playwright, Cypress, Jest, or Vitest
• Familiarity with frontend infrastructure, CDN strategies, asset optimization, and progressive enhancement
• Experience with design systems, component libraries, and maintaining UI consistency across multiple applications
• Strong product mindset with the ability to collaborate effectively with product managers and designers
• Leadership skills demonstrated through mentoring, technical decision-making, and influencing organizational standards
• U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain Public Trust clearance (Level 6C)

Responsibilities

• Define and implement strategic frontend engineering practices, tooling, and skill development across the organization
• Lead the development of accessible, performant, and user-centered web applications for government clients
• Serve as the technical authority and thought leader for frontend architecture, best practices, and engineering excellence
• Design modern frontend architectures, development pipelines, and deployment infrastructures to ensure scalable and maintainable solutions
• Deliver new features and enhancements to customer-facing applications with a focus on user experience and accessibility compliance (Section 508, WCAG)
• Collaborate with product managers and designers to balance UI/UX quality with development effort, making pragmatic trade-offs
• Build and maintain component libraries, design systems, and shared infrastructure to improve team velocity and consistency
• Identify opportunities to modernize frontend stacks and lead technical initiatives to improve developer experience and application quality
• Establish and promote frontend best practices including mobile-first development, testing strategies, performance optimization, and code quality standards
• Mentor and coach engineers at all levels, fostering a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence
• Influence cross-team technical decisions, serve as a strategic advisor on frontend initiatives, and lead organizational change
• Work across the full stack when necessary to resolve complex problems end-to-end, with a primary focus on frontend solutions
